Yesterday the news went around that Irish dance innovator Roisin Murphy had called out the steamroller that is Lady GaGa for ripping off her style, and the speaking-up was cheered, as the similarities between the two performers’ looks had been a point of contention for a while among connoisseurs of really good pop music. As it turned out, though, Murphy was in fact the victim of another game of Press Telephone, and issued a statement yesterday entitled “STOP PRESS! WHEN SHOULDER PADS CLASH!!” It read, in part, “I respect Lady Gaga’s work as an artist and as a fellow fashion icon. She is a very talented performer, playing the piano, singing live and dancing too. I Don’t Care about Shoulder pads!” Of course, Murphy’s lack of being bothered didn’t stop a member of Oh No They Didn’t from putting together a matrix of Roisin and GaGa similarities. And, well… it’s very striking, to say the least.
So, can we say that Gaga : Roisin :: Perez : Popjustice? Because as an analogy, it works on multiple levels.

That Roisin was cool and all; but, based on hearing that one song, she sure doesn’t sound like a crazy, kooky glam ball.

The one most significant thing they have in common is that both look like they’re super uncomfortable in their forced attempt to look ‘kooky’. Love the music of both, but they’re aggressively quirky in the not-good way. A friend of mine was shooting at Paris Fashion week last year and remembers Roisin making her entrance looking very harrassed by whatever incomprehensible dress she was wearing at the time. I’ve no doubt GaGa is the same.
Sigh. If one is going to criticize Lady Gaga, maybe the criticisms should be a little more worked out than vague similarities between random pictures. I’m sure that you could find similarities between any two random celebrities.
For example, one of Lady Gaga’s purported ripoffs is from her “Paparazzi” video where she is wearing a Thierry Mugler outfit. This outfit is from the George Michael “Too Funky” video from fifteen years ago. Clearly she is not ripping off Roisin - she is just wearing a designer’s outfit (from fifteen years ago!).
Lady Gaga isn’t designing all of her clothes, and I don’t think she ever claims she is. The fact that her clothes may resemble some of Roisin Murphy’s probably has more to do with the fact they are wearing the same designers, and not that she’s trying to rip someone off.
As for Roisin Murphy - in the “Overpowered” video, she is wearing Gareth Pugh. This same outfit is worn by Kylie in her “In My Arms” video. Is Kylie ripping off Roisin? No - they just both like Gareth Pugh!
We need more over-the-top pop stars wearing ridiculous outfits, not less of them!
