Mariah Carey Asks Her Audience If They Know What Love Is, And If So, Can They Maybe Show Her Some?

Mariah Carey’s new mouthpiece Roger Friedman has confirmed yesterday’s rumor that the “real first single” from Mimi’s delay-plagued, yet still forthcoming Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel will be a cover of Foreigner’s “I Want To Know What Love Is.” (In case you missed it, the new line on the Eminem dis track “Obsessed” is that it was just a “summer trifle,” and not a real lead single from the album, despite it having an expensive video and it being called a single by Mariah’s camp. This couldn’t be because it hasn’t hit the Billboard Hot 100’s top 10 in the five weeks that it’s been out, could it? Cough.)

Anyway, Friedman’s item is worth reading, if only to provoke giggles when he gets all Andy Rooney on the “stage names” of “Obsessed” producers Tricky and The-Dream, not to mention when he drops the decree that “Carey’s album, is, as they used to say, ‘what the kids want.’ Plus, it’s got stuff for the slightly older crowd.” Of course, that laughter might turn to tears when you realize that, yes, he gets paid to basically serve as a semi-credible mouthpiece for his bigwiggy pals. (Remember when he was all about the super-spendy boondoggle that was the Social@Ross series? Good times!)

    Maura,

What do you have against Mariah Carey? I’m just curious. You’ve been writing negative stuff about her since I started reading this music blog. Have you ever considered writing all the things above in a more positive tone? Most of which by the way are comng from information about the artist that you obviously lifted from different news stories in the net, accurate or not. You seem to be a very intellectual person yet you resort to writing in a way that is considered a “low-blow” to an artist, however you see them artistically. Are you perhaps being paid to write in such a way by some people? Just a thought.

Anyway, if you don’t post this, I might construe this as a confirmation of my thoughts. Otherwise, no harm done, right? I’m just expressing my thoughts just like you.

Hello, overly sensitive lamb! I think if you go back in the archives, you’ll see an evenhanded tone in my posts regarding Mariah — sure, I might not be a stan who refutes any critique with a rundown of all her No. 1 hits, but I also am totally willing to call out the good when I see it. (Case in point: “I’ll Be Lovin’ You Long Time,” which got the shaft from everyone and which I was pretty vocal about liking all last year.) I know that on the Internet, anyone who might have an opinion that isn’t either horribly neutral or overwhelmingly positive is termed a “hater” by crazed fans, but come ON.

I’d love to know who you think is bribing me, though. That is totally hilarious.

(Also you didn’t need to post this comment four times! Thanks for the extra pageviews, though.)

Now, I’m an overly sensitive lamb? Maybe. Yeah, my thought of you being bribed by someone to write these articles is hilarious, but one can’t help but think that. I apologise for it though (’cause that in itself is a low-blow). I distinctly remember you liking “I’ll Be Lovin’ You Long Time”, (thank you) but that’s about it. The negative comments from you kept rolling on and on and on and on. It gets tiresome even for non-fans. Actually, I enjoy most of your articles. Some I agree with, most I don’t. But when it comes to her, it just ticks me off that you write a lot of negativity about her almost every other day, if not once a week. Just please lay off her if you have nothing good to say about her. I’d rather not read anything about her at all in your blog than read something negative. You see, you have a wide readership and your words become gospel truth for many. End result, they won’t consider ever listening to her without bothering to actually listen to her music. You might say that I’m insulting your reader’s intelligence but saying that, but come on . . . you know I got a point here. This applies to all other artists whom you don’t like and write trash about them.

@barnok: Look, I have to report the news. It’s my job. And seriously, bullshit PR moves like retroactively calling “Obsessed” a “buzz single” only after it didn’t shoot right to No. 1 like it expected need to be called out — if it had topped the charts right away like expected, you know that the current scenario wouldn’t be unfolding. It’s not “negativity” to point out that a PR campaign is being shoddily orchestrated; it’s called “thinking critically,” and you may want to look into what it actually entails.

If anything, you and other fans of Mariah should be pissed at the way IDJ not only botched the release of this song, but screwed up the last album’s follow-ups to “Touch My Body.” Not at people pointing out that the old record-company machinations don’t really work in this new age.

Why Barnok, you almost had me believing you’ve never once actually had a negative thought about people or things that have frustrated or irritated you at one point!

  6. by barnok at 1:43 pm

I see your point. Thanks for putting me in my place. Sometimes, I need a smack in the head. Heheheh! You’re right, she’s been handled poorly since last year after Touch My Body. Anyway, for me, as long as she makes music that I have loved since Vision Of Love, even if any single won’t reach anywhere near the Top 10 in Billboard Hot 100, I’d be ok.

For NedRagget, at least you “almost” believed me :) but, no, I’ve had a negative thought or two about people or things that have frustrated or irritated me at one point in the past. The thing is, it’s not in a medium that may influence a lot of people. If you are in such a position, at least have a conscience to look into how it would make or break the involved person.

@barnok: I was gonna blow my life’s savings on 934 copies of “I Want To Know What Love Is.” You in?

  8. by barnok at 2:08 pm

Why the exact 934 copies? And why the heck that many? One should be enough for you to hear the song over and over again. Besides, its gonna be on radio anyway. :)

  9. by k-rex at 3:03 pm

@barnok: 1000-934=66. Ten people buying 934 will leave 660 unsold copies. Subtract 6 more (18 number one hits minus 12 studio albums) and you get a number of unsold albums sacrificed sacred to the Illuminaughty and sufficient to resurrect Whitney Houston. Simple math.

Phil Collins, Prince, Journey, even Def Leppard. Now Foreigner, what next, Iron Maiden’s “The Trooper”.

Seriously though, I am curious to hear her version of “I Want to Know What Love Is”.

@ruf: what next, Iron Maiden’s “The Trooper”

I actually would want to hear that.
