Dear MTV: If I Promise To Live-Blog The Video Music Awards, Will You Maybe Quit It With The Increasingly Horrible “West Side Story” Promos?

neyostarshipI mean, an ad that’s framed as a duel between Cobra Starship and Ne-Yo? I know I’m a little out of your target demo, but it seems like I would at least enjoy those two artists facing off. And yet. And yet. The latest West Side Story-themed ad for the Sept. 13 Video Music Awards is a trainwreck of epic proportions—an achievement, I suppose, given that it’s only 30 seconds long, but. What are those synthesizer horns at the end? They’re not “triumphant” as much as they are “demo track on a Casio keyboard that some production assistant found molding in a corner of the basement.” Please, for the love of God. Stop it. Or at least get Matt Parker & Trey Stone to show you how to properly write an homage to the art of the musical. The clip after the jump.

And Katy Perry is next up! It’s not even September and I already want to be kicked in the head.

  1. Woah, those synthy horns ARE disorienting. But, and I could be remembering this all wrong — but the original doesn’t end with horns but a swoop of woodwinds, which may explain why this sounds like when I used to honk the horn of my former Hyundai Elantra GT. Embarassingly weak!

But! I do have something important to say here — the Parker/Stone school of homage would be totally lost on the kids of today. Thanks to HS Musical, Glee, et. al., they associate the musical with the chipper earnestness that’s reflected in this number.

  2. This makes me want to stab things.

  3. Was that supposed to be intentionally bad? Ne-Yo’s singing was terrible, the “dancing” by Cobra Starship looked like an epileptic 5-year old’s, and when they tried to sing together, the dissonance was so massive, I’m sure it created a rip in the space-time continuum. The synchronized horns was the icing on the cyanide-cake.
