Thanks to the back-to-back chart domination of “Boom Boom Pow” and “I Gotta Feeling,” the Black Eyed Peas have reigned at No. 1 on the Hot 100 for the past 20 weeks—a run that shatters the record for most consecutive weeks at No. 1 by a musical act, which was previously held by Usher. “Boom Boom Pow” hit No. 1 on April 9. What has happened in the world since then? A look back, after the jump.
• Kris Allen became the new American Idol. Then Michael Jackson died. (Not related.)
• Other people who died: Farrah Fawcett, Billy Mays, John Hughes, Jack Kemp, Bea Arthur, Les Paul, former Idol contestant Alexis Cohen.
• A low-flying plane freaked out a lot of New Yorkers.
• Jeff Goldblum joined Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and was immediately dispatched to Williamsburg. As possible retaliation for this, the Internet tried to kill him.
• Bernie Madoff got sentenced to life in prison for running a ginormous Ponzi scheme. Later, the dick jokes started.
• Sarah Palin resigned as governor of Alaska. (And then stopped Twittering.)
• LOTS OF YELLING ABOUT HEALTHCARE. Much of it incoherent.
• Arrested Development remained canceled.
• We were all rendered two thousand and late. Except for Jason Mraz, whose unkillable “I’m Yours” has now been on the Hot 100 for 70 weeks.

I honestly don’t know how I have done this but I haven’t heard any of those two songs. And it’s not that I have been avoiding them or something, but I haven’t looked for them either. Normally I would run to Youtube out of sheer curiosity but… these guys… I think they’re the Mehest of the Meh. Fergie by herself is at least more entertaining.
@fre2daa: Somehow, I find myself in the same boat. I don’t usually have occasion to turn on the radio, but I do watch Mtv, VH1, etc. - hell, I’ve even spent a significant amount of time on Billboard.com lately! And yet, these remain two songs I have never heard. I have no aversion to hearing either of them (though I have a feeling I have a clue what they’d sound like, and an idea that I’m not missing much), just no particular interest in actively making that happen.
@Bruno the Fishing Dog: Ok, I’m not gonna claim that I haven’t heard “Boom Boom Pow” dozens of times and will even go so far as to admit that I like the line “I’m so 3000 and 8, you’re so 2000 and late,” however, I’m not sure about the “I Gotta Feeling” song. Is that the song that says “la heim” and “masel tov,” thus ensuring that if it all goes south for the Black Eyed Peas, they will always be able to get gigs on the lucrative bar and bat mitzvah circuit?
Oh yeah, but I will sign on to a theory that the Black Eyed Peas killed Michael Jackson, if anyone can come up with one.
@How do I say this…Throwdini!?!: yeah “I gotta feeling” is the one that says “la heim.” i am in now way a black eyed peas song, but i gotta say, i like that one.
black eyed peas fan* my bad
It’s comforting to know that there are others like who couldn’t care less about the BEP.
