I enjoy this brooding cover of Womack & Womack’s 1988 R & B single “Teardrops,” which comes to your screen courtesy of the buzzy British outfit The xx, very much; the xx’s debut album, which came out last week, just jumped to the top of my too-long “2009 releases to be listened to” playlist as a result. (Plus, I had at least two elementary-school pals who had the synth pictured in the above clip, I’m pretty sure; I myself owned (and wore out) a Casio back in the day.) The original after the jump.

Yeah, between the XX and Micachu I’m thinking there might be life whatever can be called UK indie yet.
The original might be my favourite song of the 80s. So, so perfect.
Also, I’ve always wanted to hear Feist do a cover of this song. I think her warble would be a good match.
ALSO also, the XX are the first overhyped band that I’ve heard in a looooooooong time that actually lived up to the hype. Anyhoo…..
@NedRaggett: @ScrabbleChamp: I bought the xx’s album based in part on the recommendation on Chris Weingarten’s 1000TimesYes twitter feed (great stuff Chris!), and I’ve had it on in the background at work for about 5 or 6 plays through, but I just can’t get into it. It’s not bad, but its just not jumping out at me. Am I just listening to it in the wrong setting or is maybe this group just not for me?
It’s not an album that will ever jump out at you. I suggest you play it late at night, when the neighbors have gone to sleep and the moon shines a light into your bed/living room. This version of “Teardrops” is my favorite cover song of the year, and the xx is my favorite new band of the ’09. Looking forward to seeing them play live.
@How do I say this…Throwdini!?!:
Well, I’ve been listening to it at work, too, but I definitely think it would be better at night. I think part of the reason that I like it, though, is shock that a band of their style is getting so much love from the press. I’m usually into the quieter, moodier stuff, but that stuff rarely makes magazine covers, you know?
