That warm person she brought to the judging was herself, Paula Abdul. That action is called “arriving somewhere while still alive,” and you’re right, she did it well.
This clip piqued my curiosity (mostly since Malakar has a super unpretentious and awkward nerd smile, which are the best) and I YouTube’d a few his tracks. Most are okay in that plodding K-pop ballad sort of way, but “I Got It For You” is terrible. As a decade-long Mandy Moore fan, I have faith in the second-tier pop-to-credibility reinvention.
