So there is a rumor that Amelle Berrabah has left pop trio the Sugababes just as they were on the cusp of breaking in the States, and that her replacement would be Jade Ewen, who sang this year’s UK entry in the Eurovision contest. So far just one British magazine is reporting it—as something that’s off-the-record and only “confirmed” via lack of denials—but there is some actual real news to come out of all this:
According to a just-published interview with British style rag PonyStep, former Sugababe Siobhan Donaghy, the first member to exit through the group’s revolving door, has completed her hiatus from music and is now working on a follow-up to her stunning 2007 record Ghosts. Hooray! OK, so it might take a while, but still.
Also Donaghy wants everyone to know that lone remaining original member Keisha Buchanan “never wanted me in that band and made my life a living hell.” (That was actually how I found this piece—it was linked from the Heatworld piece exploding this rumor. And the interview came out yesterday! How prescient, PonyStep. How prescient.)

This is serious: I’ll always be thankful to Maura for having introduced me to the grandness that is Siobhan’s “Ghosts”. I really think that if it wasn’t for her I’d never had gotten around to it.
That album is the shit.
Siobhan is one of the great pop geniuses of this century. I find it utterly bizarre that her first exposure to pop celebrity was Sugababes, but Ghosts is my waking up still hungover on Sunday morning soundtrack.
That being said, the idea that Amelle leaving the Sugababes means they are now broken up is sort of hilarious considering the tenuous grasp at permanence its lineup has previously had. Although, after seeing her and Keisha call Mark Ronson terrible names (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zcZcxuXeJo8), I kind of loved this incarnation of the group and secretly hope this isn’t true.
Well crap, now all of the British papers seem to be reporting this, and Heidi, Keisha, and their various record labels are just saying nothing, even though it’s midday in the UK. I do have to have special love for a country where the girl who sang the Eurovision song and has just put out her first proper solo single can consider being the sixth member of a three-person pop group a step up career-wise. The British pop industry is amazing and should be worshiped.
