Mika’s The Boy Who Knew Too Much and Sean Kingston’s Tomorrow both came out this week. One is outselling the other by a 10,000-copy margin. And it’s not the one with the seemingly inescapable pop hit about dialing 911! Can we blame the bobbleheaded cover art? (Meanwhile, in completely unsurprising news, Pearl Jam’s Backspacer is set to bow at No. 1 with estimated sales in the 200,000-copy range.) [Hits]

Re: Pearl Jam – it’ll be their first No. 1 album since No Code. Go figure.
Not to sound like the poster child for internalized homophobia, but Mika’s the worst. Of course people are going to buy his album, because he got stupid Jonas Akerlund to film his skinny white ass prancing around in his underpants for the interminable three minutes of his crappy song. And then when he suddenly came out of the closet this week? What the fuck was that? Jesus. Shit. Hell.
I don’t think Mika is terrible because he’s in his underwear; women do it all the time in pop, and it’s considered a quite brilliant selling point by The Industry. I just dislike the album because it is relentlessly poppoppoppop with no letdown, start to end. It’s an exhausting experience, and I’m not sure which review I read that said it succinctly, but he really does need an editor. He makes some good tunes, has an idea about melody, but it’s all a bit of a glossy major label version of Patrick Wolf: too much shit all mixed in, with little hope of it lining up in a way that appeals to general pop sensibilities.
His sexuality, while being of little interest to me, no doubt means a lot to young gay kids, and his pussyfooting around that issue until after he had major label success (and now appears to be struggling to sell the same volume of albums) does seem incriminating, especially coinciding with Celebrate Bisexuality Day.
