God Bless Robbie Williams

robbiewilliams1I have no idea how the lyrics “All we’ve ever wanted / Is to look good naked / Hope that someone can take it” are supposed to tie in with 9/11 conspiracy-theorizing, but in the twisted mind of pop genius Robbie Williams, the two are linked irrevocably. Maybe I need to listen to his new single “Bodies” some more! Or maybe I got confused because of pressure from his label, who, when made aware of the thematic bond, advised Williams against turning the song’s zoomtastic video into 9/11 Was An Inside Job: Now With A Super Catchy Chorus:

Talking about his new single Bodies the former Take That man revealed what he’s been up to whilst living in the States.

“The song itself is a big conspiracy-laden song. Its where my head’s been for the last 3 years, on the internet watching films like Zeitgeist, The God That Wasn’t There and 9/11 Was An Inside Job.”

Robbie nearly themed the Bodies video around conspiracies but explained: “they (the public) would have said- ‘he’s definitely gone mental.’ So I said, ‘what do you think we should do?’ And they (label or management) said ‘lets do an aftershave advert’ and I’m like, ‘cool!’”

Um, Robbie? You’re the same guy who stripped down to your skeleton in a music video. Yes, that was before 9/11, but c’mon, I think the public embraces your brand of crazy. Heck, it’s a large part of what makes you you!

    You’re not talking about the American public, are you, Maura? The Sugababes, Robbie Williams, Mika…sometimes I think you (choose to) forget what country you live in.

    @pdfreeman: As a British pop fanatic living in the US, it’s a common problem that I have as well, when speaking about English pop music in context. You hear enough Girls Aloud tracks in the background of English soccer games, see Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s Rimmel ads during Grey’s Anatomy, yhear Z100 hyping “Get Sexy,” well you tend to forget this isn’t England after all. BBC America helps nothing as well.

    Maybe Maura and I can immigrate and grown old in Weston-Super-Mare together.

    @ampersandparade: Is this a proposal???

    (And @pdf: I am never talking about the American public when it comes to “caring” about musicians. Because they don’t in the grand scheme of things.)

    @Maura: Yes, but remember that in Britain commitment means you can be replaced by a Eurovision winner at a moment’s notice.
