I’m quite looking forward to Zombieland, the (89% fresh!) Woody Harrelson-starring flick about a forthcoming zombie apocalypse that opens today. Why a post about a movie that doesn’t even have an official soundtrack out yet? Well, the man who directed Zombieland, Ruben Fleisher, has a music-video connection; early in his career, he was behind the camera for a bunch of videos by the likes of the Dismemberment Plan and Kid Sister, as well as two clips attached to fairly big singles of the oughts. Peep the videos for two of my favorite tracks of the decade (NB: they ranked No. 34 and No. 110, respectively, on Pitchfork’s big list) after the jump. (What better way to start off a Friday morning, etc.)
M.I.A., “Galang”
Dizzee Rascal, “Fix Up Look Sharp”
(This would also be a good time to note that I’ve been trying to write about Dizzee’s new album Tongue N’ Cheek, which came out in the UK last week, for a couple of days now, but its beats are so crazy that they make me feel intoxicated about three songs in. I saw him play last week in Dublin and he was fantastic, even if he didn’t do his music-criterati breakthrough “I Luv U.” Here is one of the singles from his new album, the Armand Van Helden-assisted “Bonkers,” which went to No. 1 on the singles chart across the pond:
See what I mean about the beats? Maybe it’s because I’m listening to it on headphones. )

I was five seconds into that bottom Diz song and dancing. It gets better and better. Wow.
Furthermore, this hit #1? Imagine this booming out of cars instead of “I Gotta Feeling”? That’s too cool for the US.
I was stopped in my tracks when I first heard “Bonkers” a few months back on the UK Chart Show on Virgin Radio – man, if this album and the new Basement Jaxx could rule the charts on this side of the ocean (”Raindrops”, people! “Twerk”!), I’d be really really happy.
@Rockabye: Ha, watching MTV Hits UK last week was like a lesson in “too cool for the US.” Natalie Imbruglia’s new song, Mini Viva, this…
Saw this movie last night. Must watch for the opening credits which features the best use of Metallica in the history of cinema.
@LostTurntable: I can’t imagine a better use of Metallica in cinema than the hilarious SOME KIND OF MONSTER, but I’m probably going to see ZOMBIELAND tonight so we’ll see.
Great movie and a pretty good soundtrack in various scenes throughout the movie. And I agree @LostTurntable , the Metallica was PERFECT..
Plus the cameo was funny as hell, glad I didn’t wait to see it and have coworkers spoil it for me :)
