In the latest sign that “pop music” is breathing its last gasp in 2009, the late Michael Jackson just scooped up five nominations for this year’s American Music Awards—including two “Favorite Album” nods for Number Ones, a greatest-hits compilation that was put out in 2003. (The nominees were in part derived from SoundScan data, and Number Ones is currently leading the album-sales pack for 2009; still, what does this say about music right now, etc.) Taylor Swift has the highest number of nominations, with six overall.
