Leighton Meester Has Been Around The World

58430858“Somebody To Love” is the first track to leak out from the debut album by Gossip Girl starlet Leighton Meester, and the Robin Thicke-assisted song is an odd choice for a first single; it’s a subtle track that was obviously meant to sound really good during the waning hours of clubbing, with its washed-out, sparkly backdrop and Meester going on about being so bored with the world’s romantic offerings in a barely enunciated murmur. I was kind of lukewarm on it at first, but it’s turned into quite the grower! It also makes me wonder if her album is basically going to consist of her shape-shifting her persona to fit in with whatever guests she’s wrangled into each song, since “Somebody” is pretty much the antithesis of her Cobra Starship collab “Good Girls Gone Bad.” Clip after the jump.

Well I like this quite a lot, but I was also a fan of the “Body Control” leak at the start of summer. This is loads better than her “Birthday” demo from last year; this feels like a proper pop song by a proper pop singer, and I think it shows some amount of confidence to release a song without some sort of out of control middle 8 or a soaring bit. This is a very chill song.

FWIW, Maura, I think her having lended her vocal prowess to Cobra Starship was less about artistic collaboration, than about getting her name out there and allowing people to get past the shock of Blair Waldorf: Pop Star. If this is the direction she’s going in, I’m totally buying into it.

@ampersandparade: Could be, although apparently Gabe Saporta’s going to be on the album. So I guess we’ll see!

Woah, I didn’t expect ANYONE other than me to like this, so I’m glad there’s at least two more. I think the reason I like it is that it stole a lot of its DNA from Stacy Q’s “Two of Hearts.” This feels like a slowed down, more murmury version. Like it.

I haven’t heard “Body Control” but I really liked “Birthday” - it felt like a fun, confident pop/rock song. It also seemed to actually use Leighton’s voice, unlike this one.

@Maura: Gross. I hate it when you give me good news alongside bad news.

@chachwitablog: I hate double-posting, but it also occurred to me, if you dig this there is a leak from a few days ago that can be sourced from the usual placs called “Set It On Fire” that is attributed to her that samples from New Order, and sounds very much in the same vein. If this is actually her, then I feel compelled to have faith in this project.
