During the closing song of Depeche Mode’s show on Tuesday in Lima, Peru, concertgoers who had been having a fine time up to that point were sent into a tizzy when they thought they heard DM lead singer Dave Gahan bid farewell to the people of neighboring Chile—after all, as the AP helpfully notes, “The South American neighbors are historic rivals who fought a 19th century war and still argue over everything from their border to which country is the originator of pisco, a potent grape brandy.” A clip of the offending moment is above, with Gahan yelling out two sign-offs at around 1:03 and 1:43; in the latter farewell, he’s clearly saying “Thank you very much, good night,” but I have no idea what he’s saying at the earlier point. Listen and tell me this: What is he saying at the minute-and-three mark? Because really, the distortion and crowd noise are terrible. [YouTube / AP]

Dave Gahan Nearly Causes International Incident By Just Saying Goodbye

Listen Peru, if Dave Gahan says you’re in Chile, you’re in Chile.
Dave says “Come On” at 1:03 (really around 1:07). Just watch Madison Square Garden footage of Never Let Me Down Again on Aug. 4, and he does the same “Come On”, but with a hand wave.
And Dave Gahan says “Thank you very much, goodnight” as he does after Never Let Me Down Again at every show. The word night got confused with the word children when translated into Spanish, then when retranslated back to English, the word children got confused with the word Chile. Dave didn’t mess up, but the news reports so did!
Obviously, this is a vile attempt at disinformation designed to inflame the passions of Peruvian new romantic synth pop fans and foment moody violence!
Or… when I saw them at the Hollywood Bowl, I couldn’t understand a word he said. I assume the sign off is always, “Good evening, Pasadeeena.”
If you were walking in his shoes, you’d be in Chile, too.
Never let me down to South America again
Dave can’t do full on Spinal Tap antics anymore, allow him this gentle moment of confusion, I say.
Are you saying we shouldn’t have let him behind the wheel, then?
I don’t want to start any Peruvian rumors, but I think that Dave’s got a sick sense of humor.
Don’t take it personal, Jesús.
Everything counts in large amounts…..small South American countries, not so much
He really should just leave in silence. You know, to avoid any condemnation.
Dave, get the balance right man! and avoid fragile tension.
Only when he loses himself in South America…..
