Just when you thought we’d escape 2009 without another No. 1 single from the chart-dominating Black Eyed Peas, the group’s plaintive DirecTV tie-in “Meet Me Halfway” is up a whopping 119% on this week’s Hot Digital Tracks chart, selling 127,000 copies and vaulting from No. 16 to No. 5. Ahead of the Peas:
Britney Spears’ “3″ (No. 1, 172,000 sold, down 33%)
Owl City’s “Fireflies” (No. 2, up 13%)
Miley Cyrus’ “Party In The USA” (No. 3, down 5%)
Jason DeRulo’s Imogen Heap-biting “Whatcha Say” (No. 4, down 1%).
“Fireflies” is pretty much the Peas’ biggest chart obstacle at this point, as far as track sales go—it’s been No. 1 on the iTunes Music Store for most of this week. So, what we’re looking at here is battle to the death between the Kings And Queens Of Crass (just confirmed as the “sole musical guest” for the forthcoming Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show!) and the majors’ attempt to bring the Postal Service into the big-box stores! This is almost making me hope that the Glambertzons go really crazy and buy up every copy of “Time For Miracles” that they can get their e-hands on.

That is some truly vantastic art.
@NedRaggett: I am sort of expecting a space-metal ship with like Tommy Shaw as captain.
Also? Just followed that link to “Fireflies” which I hadn’t heard before, and I know others have remarked on how the Postal Service thing, but jesus aich. I mean, come on.
@KingofPants: Honestly I more think this too:
Bah, didn’t work. Just go here:

I thought I recognized this font:

but wait, they haven’t cracked the top 20 of the billboard radio chart, so without breaking 200k in sales how are they going to make it to number 1? Jay Sean was #1 (for a weak) with sales in the 150s but top airplay; Britney was #1 with sales in the 250s and little (but some) airplay. Even if Britney loses the top spot, it has to be to something like Miley or DeRulo, with top-10 airplay and comparable sales to the Peas.
(Unless you’re expected the sales for “Halfway” to keep exploding…*shudder*)
edit: but now that I think about it I would take about 10 more Peas #1s before a single Miley Cyrus Hot 100 triumph. God she’s the WORST.
@chachwitablog: Doing my job for me, thank you!
To be fair, I think Maura’s saying the track is on the rise and could top the Hot 100 (shudder) in a couple of weeks if the sales trajectory continues. Remember, these numbers are for the tracking week ended last Sunday; as of this writing, “MMHW” is ranked second at iTunes, behind Owl City.
But none of that’s going to happen on the Hot 100 released tomorrow. So Maura’s quip, “…what we’re looking at here is battle to the death between the Kings And Queens Of Crass … and the majors’ attempt to bring the Postal Service into the big-box stores,” is the operative battle on the Hot 100 coming out a week from tomorrow. On the Hot 100 coming out tomorrow, I expect Britney to hold at No. 1, thanks to her still owning iTunes during the most recently completed tracking week.
@chachwitablog / @Chris Molanphy: Yeah I meant in the coming weeks. I think Britney has No. 1 on lock for at least the next two weeks.
But radio seems to be catching up to Owl City… and in sales, iTunes right now has Owl City-BEP at 1-2.
@Maura: They will see Owl City waving from such great heights.
@Maura: Oops! I did it again: underestimated Jay Sean. According to the always well-informed Paul Grein, Britney’s wilting in sales is going to result in a drop from No. 1 on this week’s Hot 100 (down to No. 3). “Down” returns to No. 1, thanks to its ongoing, and huge, airplay advantage.
@Chris Molanphy: Actually, Britney fell all the way to 5. The incredibly hot Jay Sean (sorry I just can’t resist) is 1, but DeRulo is up to number 2. Perhaps he could be the next to occupy the top spot, before any Owl/BEP showdown heats up?
