I really hate Chuck Klosterman, and I really love Craig Finn (at least the Craig Finn that seemed to be pretty much the best lyricist alive circa-Lifter Puller, I have no idea what’s happened to him here).

Nothing’s right, I’m torn.

A handful of years ago I went to one of Klosterman’s book readings (I think when Sex, Drugs & Cocoa Puffs was in paperback) and asked him about that particular chapter with getting all of that cash and he said that it was because the bank that he belonged only tied accounts to someone’s name and there was someone else in North Dakota named Charles Klosterman who used the same bank. Hence, the older, fully-employed Charles Klosterman’s deposits were put into the younger (and probably unrelated) Chuck Klosterman’s account. It had nothing to do with a faulty ATM (the ATM surely worked fine) or easy credit but a clerical error.

I guess that’s sort of like getting easy credit, but it really sounds like the screenwriters are reaching for a metaphor that just isn’t there.

Seriously, though, as much as I've some of the music and writing both have produced over the years, a script written by Craig Finn based on a Klosterman book is like a Stuff White People Like entry that writes itself, isn't it?
