Mattel Finally Gives Barbie The Cyndi Lauper-Inspired Haircut I Tried To Bestow On Her Back In My Youth

cyndi1Barbie’s “Ladies Of The ’80s” series has dolls modeled after Joan Jett and Debbie Harry, but if I were to spend $55.79 (whoa) on a Barbie product, it would have to be on the doll modeled after Cyndi Lauper, because she’s been allowed to keep the one-side-shaved look that fascinated/scared me back when the video for “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” first crossed my televisual transom. Oh, the Barbies that were ruined as a result! Oh, the realization that plastic hair doesn’t grow back!

(Although whoever wrote the promotional copy, which starts off “‘She Bop,’ no?” clearly doesn’t know what that particular song was about.)

  1. !!!!!!

When I was a little kid, my two favorite things were MTV (Martha Quinn was the big sis I never had) and Barbies. I actually requested, and received, Cyndi Lauper and Duran Duran cassettes for my 4th birthday…along with more Barbies, I’m sure. Little me would have died if this had existed at the time.

Probably for the above-mentioned reason, I never had any idea about She-Bop. Whoa. Good thing my mom’s not a “lyrics person”, not that she would have really cared. I have an enduring memory of sitting with her watching Madonna’s infamous performance of “Like A Virgin” on the VMAs. I remember that she was a little surprised (how funny now!) but not incensed. I heart my mom. I also heart the era when Madonna was legitimately interesting.

  2. I gave my Barbie a Cyndi haircut as well. I think that must have been pretty common at the time.

I’m glad that Mattel didn’t do a Madonna version of Barbie, because she looks more plastic now than any doll ever would.

  3. Sorry to double post but I found a MUCH cheaper price for these Barbies elsewhere:

Entertainment Earth tends to be on the pricey side.

  4. Do you guys and gals think Lady Gaga is a good singer?
