Fergie’s Axl Rose Obsession Leads Her To Cover ‘Paradise City’

fergie

It’s been a minute since we first learned that Fergie had added her leather-clad booty to the treasure trove of artists contributing to Slash’s upcoming debut solo outing, Slash & Friends. She’s in a pool with guesting Slash pals that includes such rock luminaries as Ozzy Osbourne, Alice Cooper, Dave Grohl and—where you been girl?— Nicole Scherzinger.

Prefix has posted a clip of Fergie and Cypress Hill’s reinterpretation of Guns N’ Roses’ classic “Paradise City” from Slash & Friends—and, yes, it’s just as kitchen-sinkish as the best/worst stuff on Chinese Democracy. Hear it after the jump!

Of course, Fergie’s penchant for (and awkward mimicry of) Axl Rose goes way back to the ancient times of 2008, when the Black Eyed Peas singer took to the Today Show stage and writhed around on her hands and knees in front of children like a budget lady of the night. Here she covers Heart’s “Barracuda,” but at the very end busts out her best Axl serpentine shimmy and quotes from “Welcome To The Jungle.”

And this was all after she does one-handed cartwheels while singing.

  1. I know you edited and re-edited this about four times, but can one actually have a penchant for another person? Not sure how that works. That aside, I’d love for Fergie’s next solo jawn to be full of things that sound like GNR or Heart.

  2. “where you been girl?”

    Oy.

Isn’t it time for another Chris Brown and/or Rihanna post?

  4. “where you been girl?”

BE MORE OFFENSIVE, I DARE YOU.

What’s offensive about “where you been girl?” She’s been laying low for a while, i think they were just inquiring as to what she’s been up to. Am I missing something??? Somebody please explain to me.

  6. this is pretty damn good actually. id like to hear more along these lines

ZOMBIEBOT NOT OFFENDED BY USE OF WORD “GIRL”. MORE INPUT REQUIRED TO COMPLETE CALCULATION. REFORMAT HARD DRIVE?

  8. more offensive  |   Posted on Nov 14th, 2009

    Where you been girl? WASSUP!?!?!!?

  9. What the hell is so offensive about “where you been girl”? You whiners are just looking for something to be upset about now.

This song is damned awful, btw.

She needs to quit while she’s ahead. These are two absolutely pathetic performances. She would get tossed of the stage at any dive that has live music.
Ann Wilson is nearly 60 years old and could still belt out either Paradise city or Barracuda better than “the Duchess”.
Go back to school and come back when you’ve learned to sing.

  11. @Jimbo: Dude, tha Wilson Sisters totes agree with your trenchant analysis:

Just my 0.02 This is just as good/bad as the original, maybe a little slower. This coming from a cook who having worked in bars for the past ten years has HEARD and BEEN forced to listen to the original by drunk idiots EVERY GODDAMNED weekend. The following are the drunk idiots hit songs for the past ten years, in Seattle, WA:

‘Closer’- Nine Inch Nails. He wishes he had a nine inch ‘Nail’…
‘Hurt’- Johnny Cash. Great musician, haunting cover, but FIFTEEN times a night in the THREE MONTHS after his death? C’mon, his own music already!
‘Paradise City’/'Welcome to the Jungle’- GNR. See above.
‘Seven Nation Army’- White Stripes. Don’t get me started…
‘Mother’- Danzig. Maybe his catchiest tune from (IMHO) his best solo album. I can sing it blacked out drunk thanks to how many times I’ve heard this chestnut.
‘Ace of Spades’- Motorhead. Classic, but enough is enough.
‘Mr. Roboto’- Styx. Yep, I went there.
‘Run to the Hills’- Iron Maiden. I am a fan of Iron Maiden, have their first seven or eight records on vinyl. What about ‘Powerslave’, ‘Alexander the Great’, or ‘The Trooper’. Anyone?

I could go on and on with this, but just wanted to give my opinion.
Maybe we should start a webpage of songs that are good, but WAY over played. Hope everyone is having a good day. Cheers, Antonie.

  13. Sweet jesus. She needs to be shot.

  14. Um, stupid question: don’t the Slash’s Snakepit albums count as solo albums?

  15. Oh, please. If I have to explain why a white woman (poorly) imitating African-American vernacular is offensive, then we probably don’t need to continue this discussion.

Oh…I get it. You’re saying that white people are not allowed to use the grammar (or lack of) that stereotypical “African-Americans” use! I get it. OK. Then, it should go without saying that black people should not use correct pronunciation or grammar. What? Already done? OK, thanks!

  17. Oh, for crying out loud.

what the hell am I listening to? someone call the abortion doctor. first it was just axel that was making gnr look like a joke, looks like slash is jumping on that boat now as well.

Wow, listening to Fergie's cover of “Paradise City” was a complete waste of my time. She needs to quit covering great hard rock songs and go back to stuff she's good at, like crappy hip-hop and pop.
