Ellie Goulding And Erik Hassle Serve Up An Acoustic Robyn Cover

robyncoverKudos to PopJustice for tipping the planet off to Ellie Goulding and Erik Hassle’s quite lovely cover of Robyn’s “Be Mine!” The frantic strings and urgent beats that punctuated the pixie-coiffed singer’s original version are swapped out here for an acoustic guitar. And you know what? Not only does it work in its own right, it offers a neat reminder that Robyn can write some heart-rending lyrics.

Yes, we know lots of up-and-comers perform covers to get attention, but we still applaud Hassle (an emerging Swedish talent) and “Girl Wonder” Goulding (a Welsh chanteuse) for displaying some great taste. Have a listen after the jump:

Ellie Goulding And Erik Hassle - Be Mine!

Meanwhile, if you’ve been sitting around thinking, Gosh, Robyn should really take some time out of her extremely busy schedule to whip together her own hourly radio program devoted to Afro-Funk music, then—yippee!—you’re in luck.

Turns out this Sunday is the premiere of Cherrytree Radio’s The Afro-Funk Hour hosted Robyn, where we’re told she’ll be spinning the likes of Franco & TP OK Jazz and Fela Kuti.

robyn1Now if only she’d get around to finally releasing another album… (Soon? Maybe.)

to CoE: That's the beauty of the song: If you pay attention we never know if Robyn has been rejected or has never met the person she is singing to. Go back and listen, it's quite smart. I do appreciate your take on the back-and-forth feel of the duet. Opens my eyes a little to the duet.

I'd agree that the post should have mentioned Robyn's acoustic version, but this one does take the song in a different direction by making it a duet, thus about missed connections rather than about being the person rejected. The second half is thereby rendered much more energetic; the song essentially works up to yelling at each other. I end up wanting to put both viewpoint characters in a locked room with orders to work it out, damn it -- but it's definitely a different song than the Robyn acoustic version.

If you actually did your research, you would know that Robyn released a "Ballad Version" of Be Mine on the single. And both times she performed in NYC in 2008, she performed this version.

So this cover doesn't really show off any original insight.

Maybe when Gaga covers it, you'll pay more attention and post it 5 times.
