Is This Really Lady Gaga On The Cover of ‘Elle’?

December 2nd, 2009 // 4 Comments

If it weren’t for that insanely scrawled tattoo and the words “Lady Gaga” printed next to this blonde lady, we would have no idea that was Gaga gracing the cover of Elle. How were we to know, without the feathered manes or ostentacious sunglasses or freakish Anime eyes? (But it’s not a long-lost member of the Stefani-Rossdale family. We checked.) Taking the mag’s word for it that our beloved pyromaniacal ivory-tickler really sat for an interview, she discussed everything from her former waitress days to the effort she undertakes trying not to be sexy. So all of you who don’t find this Lady doable—she’s not too broken up about it.

On a recurring theme in her work: “I feel that if I can show my demise artistically to the public, I can somehow cure my own legend. I can show you so you’re not looking for it. I’m dying for you on domestic television—here’s what it looks like, so no one has to wonder.”

On being a former waitress: “I was really good at it. I always got big tips. I always wore heels to work! I told everybody stories, and for customers on dates, I kept it romantic. It’s kind of like performing.”

On using her sexuality: “My album covers are not sexual at all, which was an issue at my record label. I fought for months, and I cried at meetings. They didn’t think the photos were commercial enough…The last thing a young woman needs is another picture of a sexy pop star writhing in sand, covered in grease, touching herself.”

The January Elle cover is actually a split cover between Lady Gaga and b-day girl Britney Spears, who poses with her two sons—so you’ll have to face your own Sophie’s Choice in deciding which cover to pick up at your local newsstand. (Or, you know, just forget it and grab The Economist.)

I am fascinated by Lady Gaga for this reason alone. She is like a figment. Brit-Brit would only have dreamt to have crafted this level of anonymity in public.

    How very Madonna.

She really is a very pretty young woman and has an amazing talent. I watched a video recently where she sang with no music on a radio station intereview and she has an amazing voice. I suppose she uses the strange outfits and outrageous stage performances to make people sit up and notice her … like Madonna did in her early years. Personally I think this lady will be around for a long time.
