Last night’s New York City launch party for new online video hosting site Vevo boasted appearances by pop’s flashy elite. Mariah Carey, Rihanna, Adam Lambert, Sheryl Crow, Shania Twain, Bono, Lady Gaga and Pete Wentz all mingled at Skylight Studio with Google CEO Eric Schmidt and Interscope Records chief Jimmy Iovine.
Vevo, which is partly owned by music giants Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment, hopes become the music video viewing destination online—the MTV for the iTunes generation, if you will. Theoretically, there will be no more YouTube-like slogging through clips of hamsters dancing around to “Since U Been Gone” or 12-year-olds doing cartwheels on their bed to “Big Pimpin’” while trying to find the artists’ actual videos.
Vevo is said to already have over 14,000 vids up now provided by the various major labels. Of course, each time we’ve tried to log on this morning, we keep getting a server error warning. Guess YouTube (which is backing Vevo, along with parent company Google) doesn’t have anything to worry about yet.
Here’s Lady Gaga performing “Speechless” at last night’s Vevo launch party:

Congrats to the labels for discovering Web 1.0!
The reason Youtube “works” is that you start out looking for one thing and discover all sorts of other cool things: live concert video, musicians that appeal to people who like the musicians you’re looking for, covers of the song you’re seeking, video-making contests, literal video, fan-made videos, and yes, hamsters doing the cha-cha to heavy metal. Youtube incrementally distributes video to viewers who are not yet fans of a given act.
The Vevo model assumes you’ve gone looking for a specific act (that is, you’re already a fan or you’re following a news item), and the best it can do in expanding awareness of an act is to make recommendations. Since I’m getting the same recommended songs and play lists no matter what video I click on, functionality here needs some work. Or it assumes viewers will check in a on Web site with the same casual usage that characterized watching MTV back at the dawn of time.
I can’t stand Rihanna but she actually looks super hot/cute there. Adam is adorable but he should definitely smile more.

Adam Lambert is copying Bill Kaulitz. Adam has said Bill is his celebrity crush, but from there to steal his style is too much!
Bill Kaulitz (Nov.5,2009 EMAs) and Adam Lambert (Dec.8,2009 Vevo Launch Party):

adam has a stylist now, so i presume the stylist is copying bill’s look. maybe adam should get a new stylist.
@2t2tag, Adam knows very well who Bill Kaulitz is. Adam said on MTV that his celebrity crush is Bill Kaulitz and he has also tweeted that he was fascinated with Bill and he also said on american idol that Bill is his hair idol. So this is not adam’s stylist copying Bill, is adam himself!
Gosh, I wouldn’t have thought Adam would need a stylist, he’s always looked gorgeous with exquisite taste so far…Love you Adam, I will be your loving and loyal follower forever…
Who cares if Adam’s look is similar on one day to some other rocker? That is the style so it happens. I’ve seen women in the exact same dress at an event. Adam is gorgeous and so is Bill. Love Adam!! Not my favorite hairstyle for him, but it served the purpose that day.
@Janis, It’s not one day. Adam has been stealing Bill’s whole style.
@Janis, Adam’s style was not like that before american idol
