Green Day sure had a lot on their plate this past year: promoting 21st Century Breakdown, embarking on a world tour, developing a Broadway musical based on their songs, raking in the Grammy noms and sweeping the Rolling Stone readers’ best-of-the-decade poll. Now the punk-pop punks are following in The Beatles’ footsteps by announcing their own Rock Band game—the band broke the news at Spike TV’s Video Game Awards this past weekend. Check out Billie Joe Armstrong, Tre Cool and Mike Dirnt’s dead-on likenesses in the above preview clip of Green Day: Rock Band. Finally, you won’t have to compete against thousands of other Green Day fans for the chance to shout “Longview” into a mic.

The game will be available for Xbox 360, PlayStation3 and Wii in 2010, and will feature songs from all of their eight studio albums. Rock Band is released through Harmonix, not Activision like Band Hero and Guitar Hero, so hopefully Billie Joe Armstrong doesn’t have to worry about his avatar being forced to sing Blondie songs against his will.

One musician we can fully assume will be picking up the game will by Sean Kingston protege, Iyaz, who’s desperate to work with the band on his forthcoming debut. “It most definitely will happen,” Iyaz told The Boom Box at September’s VMAs (although they’re reporting it now, how timely). “Most definitely will happen. I want to switch it up. I want them to go island, and I’m gonna go Green Day.”

He might have some serious problems pinning Billie Joe & Co. down, since the band isn’t really known for teaming up with other acts—their last (and pretty much only) collaboration was 2006′s “The Saints Are Coming” with U2. And sorry, Iyaz, you are no U2. (Yet.)

Gotta be honest – I think harmonix could have done better on this. Stones, Zep, hell even Dave Matthews band would have been a better choice.

I want to know what has green day done in the music industry that has allowed them to get their own rock band, all they have done is make good albums (anything pre- American Idiot) and then make 2 sorry albums, sell out as bad as Metallica has, and try to be the experts on politics. With The Beatles, it would make sense because they are the beatles, they paved the way for artists and styles of other music. Green Day have done nothing in comparison to this. I had heard that Queen, The Who and Pearl Jam are supposed to get thier own to. The Who maybe, Queen possibly, Pearl Jam slight maybe. But Green Day, they should stick to being sellouts and continue to make their whiny, wannabe anti-government albums
