Following up with Time‘s list of the Top 10 Albums Of 2009 comes the publication’s Person Of The Year issue. Alas, neither Taylor Swift or Adam Lambert nailed that title. But they did make the mag’s list of 25 People Who Mattered this year (along with folks like Tiger Woods, Barack Obama, Sarah Palin and the Twitter Guys).
Award show staple Swift landed at #20 on Time‘s round-up, while Lambert comes in at #7.
“One of the best-selling musical artists of this year and last, Swift had already worked her way into America’s collective heart by the time September’s MTV Video Music Awards rolled around,” says Time. “Kanye West’s jackassery…simply gave her permanent residence there.”
So true. But at least Kanye can rest easily knowing there are magazine’s out there who still find the merit in his creative side, all jackassery aside.
As for Glambo, Time notes, “…there was the way Lambert treated his sexuality, which reflected the tricky path of gayness toward mainstream acceptance. Lambert never confirmed his being gay until finishing Idol, but, importantly, he never denied it… Lambert ended 2009 out, proud—and loud.”
That pretty much hits the nail on the head. Never once did Adam apologize for his controversial American Music Awards performance, despite the fact that his father apparently suggested he do so. And though ABC initially tried the wrist-slapping tactic of rescinding its various invites to Lambert to promote his album on the network’s programs, the media company eventually gave in and featured the singer twice within 24 hours last week.
Here’s hoping Adam and ABC have finally shared an erotic, raunchy, off-camera kiss and made up.

Adam Lambert is definately very avant garde and it will probably take awhile for people to fully understand and accept him; but he is also one of the most talented artist to come along in quite some time. Not only does he have a voice to mesmerize, he is also an extremely gift performer. In my view (and apparently the Times and Rolling Stone’s) Adam is the most exciting artist to come along in quite some time and I believe he is well on his way to super stardom. Granted, he is not for the faint of heart – He is sweet, edgy, and sexy but in the long run that will help him make his mark. The bottom line though is the guy is just super talented and can sing his face off!
Go Adam!! The album is worth the deep dive for those who haven’t tried it yet. At first glimps it has a decidedly modern pop vibe, but go ahead and leap. I did and found that his vocals just blow my mind! Adam has infused every genre since the 70′s into this album adding vocals from heavy classic rock to elvis. The whole album is layered with electronica to awesome rock guitar riffs and it just unfolds and unfolds every time you listen. I never get bored with it and just can’t get it out of my head. This album is the beginning of a great new Glam revival I can promise you. Don’t let one 4 minute performance give you the impression that you can define who Adam Lambert is. He is that and a thousand more complex facits well worth the ride.
I’m a 49 year old conservative woman and Adam Lambert has mattered to me since March! I think he is a very special person with the ‘it’ factor needed to become an international superstar. He is humble, kind, funny and so HOT. He also happens to have the most beautiful voice I’ve ever heard.
I love Adam Lambert and I’m thrilled to see him named as one of Time’s People Who Mattered in 2009. He so deserves it. However, I don’t think that list is ranked. I think it’s in alphabetical order by last name. I’m just saying…
@WitchyWoman: Good point!
I COULDN’T HAVE SAID IT BETTER MYSELF, JEN !
I too am thrilled that Adam is on this list. He definitely makes people think about what their fears are and face it, America is afraid of the gay male. He doesn’t scare me one bit. He fascinates me. I am a married woman and I find him fascinating mostly because he has everything that I find attractive in a person: confidence, humility, knowledge of who he is, a caring/loving/compassionate soul, a great sense of humor and pride in his appearance. I believe he will go far in the music industry because of his astounding talent and whether he likes it or not, he is going to change the way mainstream people look at gay people. Maybe people will finally realize that they are human beings and basically no different than anyone else. He will win the hearts of the world one person at a time. Bravo Time magazine for putting Adam Lambert on your list!!!
I’m a 78 year old woman who, as in Adam’s song on his album, has learned to “listen to music again” because of him. His vocal range and irrepressible sexual energy are beyond belief. Except for Elvis Presley, I can’t think of any performer who compares, past or present. But enough of the kudos — I’m looking forward to seeing him on Fox tonight and everywhere else I can find him.
I am so loving all the year end accolades that are being bestowed on Mr. Lambert. I feel like a proud mother but my feelings toward him are so not motherly. Adam definitely didn't need the title of American Idol to show what a true superstar and an amazing person that he is to all of us. Can't wait to see what he does in 2010.
I like it: KISS and MAKE up! Proud of Adam for being hiself. He did it with such elegance and STYLE. This guy is one in a million and going to be a round for a long time. I can already see a TRUE HOLYWOOD STOTY featuring ADAM LAMBERT. our WILD IDOL.. I love this guy. Thank you for comimg to my life. You ROCK my world, Adam.
everything you said!!!! Adam Lambert 24/7 please!
I followed Adam throughout the Idol season. I feel that he is witty, genuine, intelligent, true to himself, talented, has a wonderful voice, and does care for others. I do feel that he is charasmatic and has risen above the negativity and prejudice in this world. I support Adam because of his ability to overcome the problems that he has faced and doesn't take himself seriously. I was disappointed in his AMA performance, but, how many of my family members and friends have disappointed me and I still support them? Kudos to Adam for being a pulled-together young adult who is successful despite the naysayers of this world.
Jenn,
Not for the faint of heart – love your comment and I enjoy Adam and celebrate his frankness and being true to himself!
