Adam Lambert’s AMA Performance: Read The FCC Complaints

January 5th, 2010 // 42 Comments

We know, it seems like 2009 was ages ago—but the controversy over this Adam Lambert performance still stings like a smack on the butt. Was the public outcry about his American Music Awards stage show really serious enough for ABC to nix multiple Glambert appearances afterward? A website called Why Not Glambert? bothered to seek the actual complaints filed to the Federal Communications Commission in the wake of the AMA broadcast, and we think they’re worth a look.

All the writers’ names have been redacted, but their grammatical errors — and in many cases, fairly naked homophobia — remain intact. Even (or especially) if you agree with Adam’s contention that he has nothing to apologize for, you’ll want to read just how strongly America rejects “lewd bisexual” performances, and you should feel the pain of viewers who found themselves “truely disguisted” [sic, obviously].

One more time for those in the back row: all arguments about the hypocrisy here aside, the period from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. is considered a “safe harbor” for broadcasters, which means they can air pretty much whatever they like without fear of penalty from the FCC. Check out a sampling of the complaints here.

I cannot believe we are going to relive this BS issue yet another time!! Adam Lambert has done over 50 performances in our living rooms in the last year and this one 4 minute performance does not define who he is as an artist. Time to GET OVER IT!!! Truly they need to re run the AMAs so everyone can look at what all went on that night and how ridiculously Adam Lambert is being singled out.

  2. cherlyn1

Adam Lambert rocked at Gridlock. His vocals were brilliant. Happy NEW Year.

  3. Zenber1

Also, this looks like the right wingnuts organized a get out the complaint movement in order to use Adam Lambert as a lightening rod for the conservation, homophobic agenda. Time to move on…

You know what I think we should all do? The next time we see a singer/entertainer grabbing their crotch or doing anything that makes us feel uncomforable….we should all contact ABC and the FCC to report it! At least Adam is humble, caring, honest, and ARTICULATE, and doesn't bash anybody for what they believe in or how they feel which is more than I can say for alot of the other entertainers or you!

The fcc is a pathetic department of our government– Hollywood has killed more people than any resent wars we have seen. Time will destroy all these sodomites and their supporters — time, disease,–destroy hollywood save the children and the country– to listen to hollywwod actors (97%) is fools leading fools– shut down the fcc. it doesn't do the country any good– shut down hollywood– Save America.

  6. bigdogbite

tired of hollywood sodomites – save the world –close hollywood and the fcc

Ms. Bain: I suggest you find another line of work since it is painfully obvious that writing is not your forte. Perhaps a refresher course in Journalism 101 would be in order? Just a suggestion … IMHO

  9. TiredOfWastingTimeOnIgnorance

LMFAO!!! Aren't there better things to do than to fine someone for physically clothed, honest, and artistic expression!!! The FCC might not be around if there is evidence of discrimination!!! Be careful FCC!!! Leave it to a good Private Investigator, if the US goverment doesn't step up to the FCC!!!! Hope you get the evidence against the FCC, whoever(s) you may be(es)!!!! It's your move FCC!!!! Hopefully, you choose the correct direction this time!!!

  10. Not again, please!

With all due respect, if you would be so kind, could highlight the grammatical errors in this article that are of such gravity as those in the complaints to the FCC. As far as I can see, the only mistakes in the article are the spaces either side of the two em-dashes in the second paragraph. The tone of the piece seems befitting of a blog in my opinion. I am merely a lowly editor by profession though so what would I know?

Grammar and syntax notwithstanding, the AMA performance has been scrutinised to within an inch of it's life. Let the chips fall as they may and let's move onwards and upwards in 2010. Adam remains a truely incredible singer and performer and I for one relish the prospect of following his career this year and beyond.

  11. Caro

Thank you for a chance to see who was so offended by Adam's performance. If any of these people had ever seen Adam during an interview they would realize that he is an intelligent, articulate and talented young man. He is close to his family and they are rightfully proud of him.. America accepted his life style but maybe weren't ready to SEE his life style……….but hey! Get over it! It's 2010…let's look forward not backward. ((And PLEASE get a better picture of Adam than the one you used for this article. Using that picture only stirs the pot that needs to come off the stove))

  12. Wandalette

The blatantly homophobic complaints that utterly ignored 1) the lewd and violent lyrics and performances of most of the other artists that night 2) the fact that the AMA's have never been a “family” show; ( at 10 or 11 on a school night my kids are snoring) pale in comparison to the criticisms of so called “fans” of Adam Lambert. Let me make this very clear: If you cannot accept everything that Adam is as an artist and as a person, ie a gifted singer, performer and, yes, a gay man, you are not really a fan. You are merely posing as a fan to give your absurd, homophobic arguments undue weight and credibility. Please stop misrepresenting yourself and making the rest of us ashamed by association. Thank you.

  13. Wandalette

The 1.3 million extra viewers who tuned in to watch Chelsea Lately when Adam was merely interviewed, and did not perform may be an indication of how overwhelmingly the complaints about the cancellations trumped the 1500 FCC complaints. ABC will not win me back until Adam is featured live on Jimmy Kimmel and GMA.

  14. Wandalette

I truly don't understand how you can say that you agree with those absurd complaints and call yourself a fan. Its as if you're saying that having less than stellar vocals (which were still better than the lipsynching of others I won't name) and having a “hostile” demeanor during the performance is on par with it being “repulsive”. Really? Or is it the homoerotic GAY nature of some of the moves that offended you? Be honest with yourself. Adam was no less sexual or “aggressive” with the mic stand during the Idol tour and you didn't seem to have any trouble with that.

  15. Jax

Instead of bringing down fire and brimstone on the whole of Hollywood, start by looking at your disgustingly homophobic face in the nearest mirror.

Hate breeds hate. By posting something like this, all you do is push people away from your “crusade” – so by all means continue. I can always do with a good laugh.

Adam Lambert performed on the AMA's at 10.55pm … any parent with half a brain wouldn't let a child under 16 stay up to watch a tv programme at this time anyway, so anyone who complains because their children were watching needs to look at themselves in the mirror too.

Faux oral sex?? Nooo shock horror!! Pulling at a girl dancer's crotch strap?? THE SHAME!!!

Rhianna marching onstage with dancers carrying weapons? Acceptable!! Janet Jackson grabbing her male dancers crotches?? Acceptable!! GaGa smashing whiskey bottles?? Acceptable!!!

WHAT??? If all this was deemed to be fine then why the backlash against Adam? Because he's gay – that's why. Your post proved that point.

Thank God I live in the UK

  16. Lisa

I think it funny that they state they want to join the “millions” who are complaining. Last count I saw was 1500. Even if you were surprised or shocked by the performance, why would you not TURN OFF THE TV OR CHANGE THE CHANNEL as soon as you decided it was not appropriate for you? No, keep it on and watch the whole thing so you can be sure you know what you want to protest. Give me a break. Have all of these people filed their complaints about the gay sex scene that was shown on the soap opera last week?

  17. Antinous

Your ignorance is absolutely appalling, you can take your bigotry and your bible and shove them up your wazoo.

  18. Antinous

Probably the right wing bible swinging wacko's from the Rev Donald Wildmon's family of obsessed ignorant idiots.

  19. Shannon Barber

I am absolutely disgusted with the fact those complaints were taken seriously at all, much less used to blacklist Adam Lambert. These people are obviously a bunch of close minded homophobes. If it were the sexual nature of the performance, they'd have a lot more problem with Janet Jackson's performance, which aired at 8 PM, when their children were much more likely to be awake and watching. And the FCC is full of it for singling out Adam and saying nothing about all the rest of the VERY adult content that aired on this program well within their window for controlling what is aired on network television. Also, if ABC is upset with Adam's 'faux oral sex' then they need to take that Cougar Town show off the air, which showed a 'Cougar' performing oral sex on a teenage boy. All I can say is at least Adam did it with someone of age. This is so blatantly homophobic and discriminatory. I have l lost respect for the FCC and ABC for even beginning to take these comments seriously. Also, Adam BRINGS VIEWERS which shows that those of us that are outraged about this discrimination far outnumber the morons complaining. Also, like another poster said, these people need to turn off the TV and learn to speak correct English anyway.

  20. JamesE

If only his music was as interesting as the controversy around him.

  21. Wandalette

Well said!!! I'd like to add that ABC completely overreacted in blacklisting Adam when they could have easily discussed the issue and aired his performances on a 7 second delay. Their reaction was utterly discriminatory and unreasonable.

  22. Zenber1

Are you under the impression that only gay people practice sodomy?? It is practiced by heterosexuals in marriages all the time. Hollywoood didn't create it either you ridiculous person. Really is it any of your business what consenting adults do in their bedrooms. Those who fantasize about what they “think” others are doing are the probably the ones who are twisted.

  23. peggy

I think if it is not for them and they are so offended then they have an on and off switch for the t.v. Could they have liked it and didn't want to…..

  24. 123Dogwalker

Are you serious? That is what ABC reacted to? Now I am really disturbed by ABC. Who is calling the shots over there? Adam Lambert's 1 AMA performance might not have been for everyone (I Loved It) but banning him more than once was uncalled for. Taking him off Jimmy Kimmel's show was stupid. Taking him of Dick Clark's event was ignorant. And saying he is so unpredictable he requires taping prior to airing his performance is so lame. He is an artist. If you need to censor him you'd better start censoring all artists. This is due to insecure men. Adam Lambert is so sexy I bet it turned some straights on. His kiss with TommyJoe was so hot that a kiss between them cause more housewives to take a cold shower than that whole “gay love scene” on ABC's daytime soap. I'm sure that was like 3 minutes. AMAs were PG14 so you had to supervise your kids. If after 5 minutes of the AMAs you couldn't tell it would be adult entertainment with Janet Jacksons pubic grabs on herself simulating masterbation and then grabbing the crotch of her male dancer, holding it and then shoving his head down to have his ass in the air…simulating back door action; then you need help. You as a parent need to police the tv better. And of course the school because sex is everywhere and if you aren't able to discuss with your kids what is happening of course they will be confused. If you tell your children sex is a disgusting thing whether it be with man and woman or woman with woman or man with man than that is the message they will learn. Don't blame the network. Take ownership as a parent. Stop blaming Adam Lambert. He is changing music and culture and it is about time!

  25. 123Dogwalker

Let's see Rhianna appeared naked on an operating table with the instruments barely covering her breast and pubic region and she was covered in oil, doing pelvic thrusts when the lasers “hit” her skin. She then sings a song about playing Russian Roulette while her back up singers march out with guns in their hands. Totally okay for young kids to see huh? Eminem raps while grabbing his crotch and being bleeped out so much due to all the cussing in his song you can barely understand him. What you can hear is that he is talking about Slim Shady (his alias) raping over 17 women! But that is totally okay for young kids to see. Alicia Keys sings a song with a silver pendant dangling just below her pubic bone. When she dances it bounces up and down. Her male dancer kneeling at her crotch does everything to her but put the heart in his mouth and yet that is okay because it is girl on guy action? Shakira and her aggressive army of women in barely there costumes did pelvic thrusts at the camera for like 3 whole minutes and they were tilted thrust so the camera was shooting up their legs. Oh totally okay for children! Lets talk about the freaking S&M cat suits Rhianna and Lady Gaga wore with crotch straps! Rhianna's was showing off the bottom cups of her breasts! Lady Gaga's crotch strap bent open when she SPREAD her legs to try and play piano, torched her piano with fire (simulating arson) and breaking wine bottles over the piano. So violence in multiple themes is okay but a fully clothed gay man in a 3 peice suit is not? The only reason why anyone would have a problem with Adam Lambert's performance is because he is gay. His performance wasn't gay. It was sexual liberation. He did sexual tones to both male and female. It was hot. It was edge. He pushed the envelope. You see more than what he did on day time television but you want to cruicify him. This artist is a pioneer in what he does. After Adam changes the music culture others will follow and artists freedom will be truly liberated. Adam rules!

  26. Lisa

I understand what you are saying also. Although I think it is crazy that Adam has been vilified for his performance, as someone who has followed him closely, I was stunned by the fact that he appeared to be so very angry throughout the entire performance. If anyone was seeing him for the first time, I think they could have taken him to be someone very different from the sweet, kind, generous soul that we know him to be. I will always believe that there was more to the story than what we know and Adam being the type of person that he is, he would never say what might have taken place backstage before the show. He went from smiling and laughing in the audience to appearing to be furious about something or someone. Regardless, the reaction of ABC was ridiculous and I have not watched the station since that night except to see Adam on Barbara Walters and the View and I was a loyal ABC viewer. I stand by Adam on this. I adore him as an artist and I think he is the hottest, sexiest, most gifted performer in the world right now. I hope I get to follow his success for many years and someday, he might just own ABC. He can change it to GBC (Glambert Broadcasting Company) and show all Adam all the time.

  27. Blondiegrrl

Regarding the em dash: It may be a journalistic style decision. I worked as a newspaper copy editor for 10 years, and we were instructed to insert spaces before and after the em dash.

  28. Blondiegrrl

Someone is cookoo for Coco Puffs …

  29. cheyennew

Repulsive in that when someone makes a hateful face and gives me the finger, I am repulsed. Pushed away. Repelled. In Adam's case, I knew he was acting a part, but damn, he's a good actor, and I was still left feeling that way. More importantly, for those that do not know anything about him, that was repulsive behavior.

As far as the oral sex simulation and fondling, I don't want to see that on TV, either. That's my personal feeling. But that's why I didn't address that, and said lets put that aside. It is a personal opinion, and I understand that others opinions differ according to their upbringing, religious beliefs, and life experiences, and I respect that. Since I do not condemn people for having beliefs and boundaries which differ from me, I have no condemnation of Adams, even when I would have wished personally for a less angry(for his images sake) and sexually explicit performance. However, the fact that he alone was singled out for pushing the sexual boundaries, when noone else was, is wrong and discriminatory. I have no doubt that it was because the sexuality was homoerotic in nature.

As for the difference between the mic stand action this summer, and taking someone's face, male or female, and pulling it into your crotch and similating oral sex, well , there is a big distinction for me. Basically, the difference between a titilating performance, and a graphic,in your face (so to speak) sexual act.

  30. Glambert AND Mom

My kids are STRENGTHENED by watching Adam's AMA performance. It makes them more tolerant human beings. If you support Adam, let the FCC know! Glamberts surely can produce more than 1,500 letters in support of Adam's art.

  31. cheyennew

Lisa- Love it! You have expressed my feelings probably better than I did. I adore him, too.
I can't imagine the pressure of expectation which was placed upon him; having the closing act of the AMA's, and performing in front of many of his own personal idols, coupled with the asinine 'too gay, not gay enough' furor leading up to it. Not to mention the complication of the performance itself.

  32. Shannon Barber

You're right, of course it was discriminatory and unreasonable. They made an example of him because they could, to please the pearl clutching homophobes, because he is a gay male. Don't see anyone jumping Janet's case over those crotch grabs, or Rhianna's over that ridiculously violent display. Nor do I see Cougar Town being moved to a slot outside the FCC regulatory window. And there is also Desperate Housewives, which airs at 9 PM, and Eva Longoria and company can be naked and sexy all they want… We could talk about the questionable things that air on ABC without incident for years and still not be done.

  33. Janna DeWitt

For the love of god people let this made-up ridiculous controversy DIE already. Adam Lambert is an artist with unparalelled talent, style and character. OF COURSE his sexual orientation is irrelevant. Any rational, open-minded person knows that. However those individuals and organizations who are bigoted, hateful and ignorant will continue to spew there homophobic vitriol as long as anyone will listen. They don't care who they hurt along the way, and they relish the scandal and the limelight . This fine young man has been subjected to more unfair and unwarranted ugliness and hatred in the last few months than anyone should have to bear in a lifetime. He has held his head high, stayed above the fray whenever possible, and answered countless personal questions which would never even be posed if he were not a gay man. Karma will take care of the hate-mongers and the bigots. And luckily for all of the rest of us, Adam Lambert will continue to perform For Our Entertainment.

  34. nikitoo

You are so WRONG. I absoloutly LOVE ADAM LAMBERT and have made many signficant efforts to support him, go see him and meet him. However, I did not support what Adam did on AMA. It was LEWD and unnecessary and not entertainment worthy of such a bright and talented person. Yes, others have been crude too, but he did stand out with extra demonstrations of lewdness on a hugly watched show. That he became the scapegoat is not fair…but then LIFE NEVER IS!

Some just dont get it. It was probably NOT about prudishness, bigotry, homofobe or kissing or the like, it is simply some decent people standing up and saying NO, I do not want TV to be brought to the lowest wrungs of our society. The views of those complainers are as valid as those that disagree.

The real truth is, that is not hard to step down off a ladder into filth. It is very hard to rise up on to a ladder and hold on to moral character.

Adam is a man of deep character, and I am confident that his gifts and intelligence and charm will alow him to rise back up. He is talented beyond belief and deserves every chance to show it.

And yes, ADAM was brilliant at Gridlock.

  35. Blondiegrrl

Filth? Please. You are overreacting. The performance was a little racy — perhaps not everyone's cup pf tea — but to call it filth is a bit histrionic. And there is NO doubt whatsoever that homophobia DID drive much of the outrage. Where was all the outrage when P!nk ground a male dancer's head into her crotch on a Fox TV show a few years ago? Just as in Adam's case, the move was censored for later airings, but the media didn't launch an all-out assault on her, nor was she banned from Fox. Why was Adam singled out? Pull your head out of the sand.

  36. Mona

I say to people: turn your tv off if you don't like what's on it. That's what I do.

  37. Mona

I say to all those people: turn your tv off if you don't like what is on it. That's what most adults do!

  38. jesterboots

I am just now seeing the performance, and I don't think there was anything more obscene than what people are subjected to every day…in fact, the irony is that I didn't even like this Adam Lambert guy…and now I am a total freaking fan for life!!!

  39. jesterboots

I didn't even like this guy before, but now I'm a fan for life…what did he do that hasn't been done before…really! There is way more obscene stuff out there.
