Gorillaz Go Retro Electro With “Stylo”

Gorillaz_StyloDamon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett and have more animated awesomeness waiting in the wings as Gorillaz gear up for the release of third album Plastic Beach.

Yesterday it was announced that the virtual band will be headlining the third night of April’s Coachella fest in Indio, California. And today brings the premiere of the first single off Plastic Beach, “Stylo.” Sounding not unlike a lost Giorgio Moroder track from the soundtrack to some sleazy early ’80s flick, electro jam “Stylo” features Albarn, Mos Def and Bobby Womack on vocals. (Hear it below!)

That is mighty analog synth-tastic.

Gorillaz recently confirmed to NME that Lou Reed, The Fall’s Mark E Smith, Snoop Dogg, Bobby Womack, De La Soul and Super Furry Animals’ Gruff Rhys lent their pipes to various tracks on Plastic Beach—which is due out March 9—while Mick Jones and Paul Simonon of The Clash contributed to the album’s title track.

As to how all these luminaries came to collaborate with Gorillaz, cartoon member Murdoc Niccals tells NME, “Leeching is the wrong word now isn’t it? It’s not like I’ve drawn blood or anything. No, I think the word ‘coerced’ sings the deal a little better. Although, yes, the coercion did come via chloroform and rohypnol.”

See? We told you there was an air of sleaze about this whole thing.
