PHOTOS: Grammy’s Worst Calls

January 26th, 2010 // 9 Comments

Look, we all make mistakes. But Grammy voters have blown so many calls over the years that the Recording Academy really ought to start distributing Miracle Ear hearing aids when it sends nominees’ albums to voters. We feel that the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences should just rename the awards ceremony “The Grammys: Where Hindsight Is 20/20”. Think we’re overreacting? Perhaps you’ve forgotten the time Metallica lost Best Heavy Metal Performance to Jethro Tull (yes, it really happened) or when Boyz II Men got passed over for Best New Artist. And who can forget the whole Milli Vanilli debacle? Not us. Take a look through the Grammys’ Biggest Goofs gallery and revisit the travesties that time forgot.

I agree with every one of your picks except the Best Rock Song for Eric Clapton's Layla. The “Song” categories are for the songwriter and the actual composition, not the recording, no matter what version was released that year. I think the voters had the chance to salute one of the great rock SONGS, thinking back to the original version.

Gorgeous guy, superb songs, still producing pop and more grammy meriting music today and oh yeah – funny too! A true enduring talent not to be missed. His newish cd “What's Victoria's Secret” is terrific!

Marc Cohn didn't just “write a nice song.” His four albums have moved, touched and inspired me more than any other artist. Your evidence that the award was a mistake is based on–let me get this straight–a “following?” And how many albums a person has released? So by the first standard, Celine Dion has a greater following than Beck or Smashing Pumpkins–she's sold more albums. So how can you say the Grammys made a mistake with her? Or by the second standard, Barry Manilow has released over 60 albums–does that deserve a Grammy? The stupidity of your criticism boggles my mind. Marc Cohn not only deserved a Grammy, he deserved more than one. And for all those who have not kept up with his music, or chosen the music of Seal over his, believe me, your loss.

My uncle was the drummer for New Vaudeville Band – Henri Harrison..the Grammy was won in 1967. I will have to ask him about this as I didn’t even know it won a Grammy!

I find that comment about them being a one-hit wonder extremely offensive, given that the NVB had a string of hits, several of which were later covered by many artistes (e.g. THERE’S A KIND OF HUSH). I met Henri by accident at London Management’s office and again, when I interviewed the band, at the Commodore in Nottingham. I also saw them at a bingo hall in Nottingam – quite a bizarre evening as Henri no doubt recalled to many people.

Not only were they one of the best bands that I have ever seen (I am 51 and have been attending live music performances since I was 4), they were also incredibly funny and knew exactly how to set up a sound system. I also loved Robert’s impression of Stanley Unwin – “Deep Joy” as the professor would have said.

    Dear Ms Erika Brooks

Do some research before you write any crappy material like this. It was “Falling into You”, not “Let’s talk about Love”, although it still sucks whatsoever.

This woman has never heard any other Marc Cohn song except ‘Walking in Memphis’ in her stupid entire life. For your information, he’s a miracle worker, you idiot.

I don’t understand. So, in 1992 when Marc Cohn won, we were all supposed to… guess that Seal was going to release 17 albums? All of these “grammys worst calls” were not that bad at all. Look at the years that they won. How were we supposed to know that Will Smith would stop rapping after MIB? Or that Bruce Springsteen would continue singing or that Rick Springfield would be “playing a fictionalized version of himself on Showtime’s Californication.”? Dumb article.
