Marc Cohn – Best New Artist – 1992
Yes, the Best New Artist prize is considered a high honor, but it’s also often considered a terrifying burden and a potentially career-ruining curse. We’re not saying Marc Cohn didn’t write a nice song, but it’s worth noting that Seal is the artist who’s attracted enough of a following over the years to release 17 albums, all titled Seal. / View Original

Whether or not you agree with the award, Herbie Hancock has been one of the most adventurous musical artists of our time, starting in the early 60's and never looking back.
Marc Cohn didn't just “write a nice song.” His four albums have moved, touched and inspired me more than any other artist. Your evidence that the award was a mistake is based on–let me get this straight–a “following?” And how many albums a person has released? So by the first standard, Celine Dion has a greater following than Beck or Smashing Pumpkins–she's sold more albums. So how can you say the Grammys made a mistake with her? Or by the second standard, Barry Manilow has released over 60 albums–does that deserve a Grammy? The stupidity of your criticism boggles my mind. Marc Cohn not only deserved a Grammy, he deserved more than one. And for all those who have not kept up with his music, or chosen the music of Seal over his, believe me, your loss.
This woman has never heard any other Marc Cohn song except ‘Walking in Memphis’ in her stupid entire life. For your information, he’s a miracle worker, you idiot.
I don’t understand. So, in 1992 when Marc Cohn won, we were all supposed to… guess that Seal was going to release 17 albums? All of these “grammys worst calls” were not that bad at all. Look at the years that they won. How were we supposed to know that Will Smith would stop rapping after MIB? Or that Bruce Springsteen would continue singing or that Rick Springfield would be “playing a fictionalized version of himself on Showtime’s Californication.”? Dumb article.
