How Did Cypress Hill Team Up With Marc Anthony For “Armada Latina”? We Need To Know

Cypress Hill is returning to the music scene after a six-year break, and we think they’ve gone truly insane in their collective membrane after listening to “Armada Latina,” a new track from their upcoming album Rise Up. The only thing more bizarre than featuring Marc Anthony crooning en español and Pitbulll spitting verses on the same track? How about using a 41-year old folk song’s catchy closing riff as the main hook?

The band samples Crosby, Stills & Nash’s lush multi-part classic, “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes,” a song that was released roughly around the same time that all four members of Cypress Hill were born. We hate to say this, but there are so many disparate influences on this track, you kind of wonder whether Cypress Hill was smoking weed when they made this. But it’s not the train wreck you’d expect. Hear it below.

Cypress Hill producer Jim Jonsin told Rap-Up that the band is striving to create “harder” and “more meaningful music,” which must mean combining a sweet folk tune from ’69 with Pitbull’s ferocious rapping and J-Lo’s husband on vocals.

(Jonsin has also worked on Mrs. Anthony’s still-not-quite-dead Love?, which sounds like it could benefit from some fresh ideas.

We honestly can’t tell if we like “Armada Latina” because of Cypress Hill’s interesting left-field sample, or because we simply cannot tire of the cheery “do do do do do”‘s from the original tune sparkling underneath the track. Either way, we give our stamp of approval. Pass to the left, please.
