Today In ‘Idol’: Ryan Tedder Vs. Adam Lambert—Who Did “Sleepwalker” Better?

March 29th, 2010 // 38 Comments

:: Are you digging this season’s elimination song, Will Young’s “Leave Right Now”? We have to admit, these 10 songs would probably be more appropriate to say goodbye to ousted contestants than a love song (as good as it is). [Idol Tracker]

:: What happened to Andrew Garcia’s front runner status? Maybe he should just pander to the judges and sing a Kara DioGuardi song like Didi Benami did. [Idol Chatter]

:: Adam Lambert tweets his frustration with being asked the same questions over and over by interviewers. (No, he was not asked to be Queen’s new frontman. No, he does not consider himself the male Lady Gaga. And yes, he’s gay. Let’s move on.) [MJs Big blog]

:: After the jump, listen to Ryan Tedder’s demo of “Sleepwalker,” one of the standout tracks on For Your Entertainment.

It may be unfair to judge a demo version, but we’re glad Tedder handed this one over to Lambert instead of keeping it for himself. Adam’s off-the-charts vocal prowess may have pushed this song to the next level, much like he did with Lady Gaga’s “Fever.”

Here’s Adam’s version for reference (not like you don’t already have Glambert’s album and have already listened to this track a zillion times, amiright?):

  1. Joy Glambert

Wow…Tedder's arrangement is so good- i like the techno-hip hop feel to it- seems more current…of course Adam's vocals are always better but I wish he had done Tedder's version as it has more edginess. Adam's version seems a little “sleepy” to me-hah pun intended. With that said though- Adam's live performance on Leno this month blew me away! So there you go- but I know I will be attacked for this opinion- oh well-sigh…Don't worry I am a hardcore insane Adam fan and he can do almost no wrong in my eyes… :-P

  2. Adamtastic

Adam has that powerful hypnotic dose he adds to all his songs.

I love Adam's voice. I am hooked. His version is soooo good. Ryan's version has some additional layering and verses going on. Adam's is cleaner and is just more appealing to me. Thank you Ryan because it is a great song.

  4. Tagrid

Tedder's demo is lovely, but Adam's is phenomenal. Gaga's version of Fever is great – but Adam blows it out of the water. Just as Muse's demo of Soaked is lovely, but Adam's version has so much more depth and polish. I don't think there is any song Adam could sing that he wouldn't improve over the original.

Adam's version is better than Ryan's but Ryan has an incredible voice. Thanks Ryan for giving Adam this song. We love you for it.

ITA, Joy. On EVERY point! I, too, am a hardcore Adam stan, but that being said….I like Ryan Tedder's version better. Sorry peeps. ☺

One reason may be that although I'm TOTALLY pro Adam, I'm grounded in hip-hop (Gen X) and pop. I listen to Top 40, Rythmic, Urban, and Dance/Electronica. Which are the main audiences (barring AC & HAC) that he is pushing his music towards. The standout touches that Ryan imprints on his version that pushes it to the top are: 1) the chorus, 2) the synth touches, & 3) the break beats. Those touches (that Adam's version lacks) are the things that are well received on Top 40 radio and that make the song less “Adult” and more “Contemporary”, hip and danceable.

That being said also, Adam always said that he got his “cred” on American Idol by singing '70s rock songs and recognizes that a large part of his fan base wants that sound from him. He also said that he wanted to find a way to infuse '70s rock througout the whole of his record. That is why I think that Adam's “Sleepwalker” sounds more “sleepy” and less “animated” than Ryan's does.

And for the record, I think BOTH singers sing it well. Seems to me Ryan can hit his notes just fine. It is HIS song after all. “Sleepwalker” isn't my fave track on the album (sounds too “old”), but I'm happy to know it;s a hit with his loyal and financially supportive fans. And when Jay Leno said he liked the song too and thought it would be a hit, that cemented in my mind what demo Adam was going for with his version and hopefully it wins him new fans. Seems like it is in Germany already. So, it's all good. ☺

Tedder wrote a beautiful song but Adam Lambert added the special touch to really bring the song to life. Adam adds so much emotion to the song and all the little nuances of his voice are a perfect fit for this song. Great song Great Interpretation!

  8. erik smith

I can think of a few, Freddie Mercury, Robert Plant, and Steven Tyler…not bad company! And so much better than some of the crap that is out right now. See him live asafp!

  9. perry

It's a great song, but love Adam's beautiful voice singing it with such clarity and emotion. Here's an amazing live, acoustic version of Sleepwalker Adam sang in Germany:

    Part 2 – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOt9MwcthnY

  10. Juli

Love how Adam sings Sleepwalker live. Love how he changes it up all the time. Ryder's version is just ok. Granted it is just a demo for the purposes of shopping around the song.

  11. Carla

Unless you're tone death or a troll pretending to be an Adam fan it's 100% Adam. His version is by far better. But as the author points out to be fair it's only a demo.

  12. Ali

ADAM for the win. His live performance of this song is even more amazing.

  13. Taylor

This song was specifically written for Adam by Amiee Mayo, Chris Lindsey & Ryan Tedder. So it is not Ryan Tedder's song. I like the way Adam sang the song on Jay Leno much better then on the album, so I guess I agree with you about that :)

  14. Gabriella

When Adam Lambert sang, it wasn't bad it's good. But I like Ryan Tedder's version better.

  15. Ladiesfirst

I'm guessing Adam heard this version before and all agreed on “For You Entertainments” version. Either way he sang the hell out of this song both on Leno and acoustically in Germany, well done!

  16. Ladiesfirst

Also, remember Adam recorded the whole album in 3 months, while on tour, so considering the cramming, they all did a great job!

  17. Mals

Definitely Adam Lambert's version. Ryan did a nice job but Adam's flows better and the vocals are superb!

  18. SILVA

    Adam 100 times better

  19. snowqueen

The reason these huge stars are giving Adam their music is because they know that his voice is outstanding. He is visually and auditoraly perfect.

  20. Lily

@ Joy Glambert… It is a sleepy song… and therefore my favorite tune late at night… when I am too tired to hear dance, rock music.. but still awake enough to drive myself home…

  21. Love Lockdown

I prefer Lambo's, I think his voice is f-n stunning.

  22. KV

I prefer Lambo’s, I think his voice is f-n STUNNING.

  23. KISO

I prefer Lambert's version vocally and instrumentally, and lyrically. Btw say what you want about Tedder, he always produced pop songs so cheers Ryan. Adam should release this, it's an awesome studio track, and sounds amazing live with heavy drums and guitar or acoustic. It's just a solid song.

  24. mumii

    ryans version is much better
    i loooove his voice <3 :)

@ghgf – thanks for thinking enough of my original post to repost it. But when you do that you really SHOULD try to get the first letter of the first word included in the text (it's Tedder) – AND put it in quotes with the name of the person you're quoting. That way you can also add your own comment at well.

  27. terie

ADAM has shown first on AI with all his interpretations of the classics & now with his interpretation of the originals that every song he sings is UNIQUE & PHENOMENAL. Case in point his interpretation of Whole Lotta Love … R&R .. acoustic … BOTH GREAT … BOTH different … BOTH ADAM!!! Nuff said!!

  28. Marzipan

Yeah yeah Adam’s is better but Ryan Tedder WROTE the song for crying out loud!
