Grace Jones Had Choice Words For Lady Gaga, But She Wasn’t The Harshest

April 20th, 2010 // 17 Comments

Since we just can’t get the Grace Jones vs. Lady Gaga feud out of our minds, we decided to throw together all of the 61-year-old icon’s quotes about the “Alejandro” singer from her recent interview with the Guardian to see if this is all just much ado about nothing. (Hint: it’s not.) P.S. It also apparently inspired Gigwise to compile a list of 10 celebs and music stars who’ve dissed Gaga. [Via Prefix] (Strangely, they left out Christina Aguilera.)

Check out Grace’s ungraceful comments regarding pop’s main monster below!

First, Guardian writer Simon Hattenstone asked Jones whether Lady Gaga was one of the “number of artists” who have asked to collaborate with Jones.

“I just don’t play with other acts as a rule,” was her reply, later followed by, “Yes, she did, but I said no. I’d just prefer to work with someone who is more original and someone who is not copying me, actually.”

On what she thinks of Gaga: “I really don’t think of her at all. I go about my business.”

On why she believes Lady Gaga has copied her: “Well, you know, I’ve seen some things she’s worn that I’ve worn, and that does kind of piss me off.”

So, bottom line—is Lady Gaga talented? “I wouldn’t go to see her.”

Meow! Don’t sound too bitter, grace. Maybe someone should tell her Gaga is just paying homage? And by someone, we mean a person wearing a suit of armor and packing a taser gun.

But that all, of course, is mild compared to the classy description Andrew Donahoe of the band Rakes gave for the Lollapalooza headliner: “Lady GaGa is trash and dresses like a prostitute. I think she’s terrible and really ugly. I hate her.”

And where are Rakes now? Sadly, they disbanded last year. Sigh.

Do you think Grace Jones is right to be irked by Lady Gaga wearing similar outfits that she’s worn over the years? Or should Gaga take Grace’s comments with a grain of salt, because, hey—it’s Grace Jones, and she’s opinionated on everything?

Lady GaGa is fun but not original. Roisin Murphy and others have been doing avant garde fashion and art with their pop music for ages.

  2. Robbie Daw

Mark, yes, and I believe Gigwise left Roisin out of that list of other celebs dissing her, no? Surprised they missed her, though she may not have ever made any disparaging comments.

  3. Little Monster from NY

I think Grace Jones needs to lighten up. Lady Gaga has always mentioned her as being one of her influences, so that's really mean. In reality, every look comes from somewhere so nothing is literally ORIGINAL.

As for “Rakes”, I have no idea what THAT is. The former band member is bitter of his unsuccessful… Well career I'll say. It was an ill judgment, it showed stupidity and immaturity. That should definitely not bother Gaga, the new queen of POP. was the first album of “Rakes” certified diamond? Doubt it. Was their music an entire movement? .. No?

Lady Gaga has changed music over the past year, and because she is so talented and extremely intelligent, she has raised the bar HIGH. Today's are struggling to keep up. Grace Jones and The Rake guy are Jealous .. AND PATHETIC.

Lady Gaga will be on American Idol May 5th :-) http://bit.ly/9h4102

  5. Stan

I can't believe Grace Jones said such harsh things about Lady Gaga. It's pretty sad, considering Gaga has stated that Grace Jones is one of her biggest influences.

  6. GAGAYAY

gaga did mention lotsa times that Grace Jones is one of her biggest influence so thats not considered copy but a tribute instead. AGREE Little monster from NY!

  7. Realist

Does anyone reading this really care what Grace Jones has to say about anyone?

  8. MariWhite

Gaga is a great pianist, a great singer and really fun, but she's NOT original. She acts like Madonna, mix with some Grace Jones' crazy fashion and her music, as M.I.A. said, sounds like Ibiza in the 80s with glam melodies.

I'm totally sure that Grace Jones is not jealous of anybody else of this world and I totally agree with her and she said that Gaga copies her. If you google some of Grace Jones fashion and Gaga fashion, there are many stuff that they were that are practically the same!

One thing is being inspired by someone – like wearing things that are as crazy as anybody else. But wearing the SAME thing with just a few changes, that's copy!

Btw, many clothes that Gaga said she draw are actually designed by other stylists – for example, that 'bubble dress' that she said she created is exactly the same one that Chalayan designed in 2007. There are some Roisin Murphy stuff that Gaga wore in the beginning of her career; and all the rest is designed by other stylists.

When M.I.A., Roisin and Grace says that Gaga copies them, that's not because they're jealous of her but probably angry to know that Gaga wears their creation and the credits go all to Lady Gaga – which is really unfair.

Gaga may be talented as performer, but she's not original at all.

Is that man on the picture Grace Jones?! Well I’ve never heard of her! But I love Lady Gaga and I don’t care what she’s gotta say.

It seems a lot of the posters are young people who do not know what real music is like. I’m so sad that despite all that talk of creativity and genius in modern times, so few people in the public arena are actually genuinely creative. The talent was much more abundant before when people were not talking about creativity as much as today. These modern performers are just stealing from good old artists, and pretend to be creative and smart. It’s disgusting. For those who do not know who Grace Jones is, follow the following link:

And note that Jones’s music is light years above Gaga’s pop rubish.

  12. Battler

I’m glad somebody called her out on it. This isn’t tribute anymore. It’s just copy-catting.

  13. Anthony

It’s hard keeping up with the Jones’.

Grace Jones and Lady Gaga Fued? I think maybe Grace Jones just wants to get some publicity out of this. What has she done in the last 20 years anyway??

  16. graham

grace jones is an icon and a legend and totally original, gaga is what she is another madonna, pop bublegum, her music sucks, grace jones was doing what gaga is doing today 30 years ago and with far more creativity, and whereas gaga and her music is for kids and the unintelligent, grace jones and her music are way above this, love ya grace.

  17. Annie

I never made a connection between Grace Jones and Lady Gaga.
I’m not sure how anyone can compare the two — one is a sleek, frighteningly feline creature, stunningly beautiful, and the other is an ever changing chameleon, able to take on unimaginable characters, a classic beauty. Both are extremely intense and sexualy charged. Strong women. The kind of women that make men take a step back and think twice.
Grace has been my hero for many years. Lady Gage got a seat on that shelf a couple years back. There’s room for both in my book. Move over Freddie, you got company.
