New Kelly Clarkson Song “Naked Eye” Surfaces, Twitter Braces Itself

May 3rd, 2010 // 139 Comments

If last week’s Twitter rant by Kelly Clarkson was any indicator, we should all be happy that the Grammy-winning songstress has been keeping her tweets to herself in the wake of another unreleased song making its way online. “Cleopatra,” a demo of a tune Clarkson said she’d written for another artist, leaked last week and caused her to go off on “disrespecting, lying, sneaky little trolls.” But while “Cleopatra” was meant to be handed off to someone else, “Naked Eye,” a new song, sounds like 100% pure Kelly Clarkson. Have a listen after the jump.

Kelly Clarkson - Naked Eye

Kelly, who recently turned 28, sounds in top form on this upbeat, slick pop track (though the chorus seems a bit sparse, lyrically). If “Naked Eye,” which musically falls into the “My Life Would Suck Without You” vein, isn’t yet on the slate as a single release, it ought to be.

“Can’t take back what you can’t change, can’t fix what’s more than broken,” Clarkson sings. And that applies to songs surfacing on the Internet in the modern age.

So we say slap this jam onto iTunes pronto, Kelly, even if your album isn’t fully ready yet. Because you’ve got another surefire hit on your hands.

UPDATE: Be sure to check out Kelly Clarkson’s other new song “Wash Rinse Repeat,” which appears to be a not-so-thinly-veiled attack on Ryan Tedder.

  1. Tyson

    I just listened to this and Arcade Fire… and they sound vaguely similar but nothing to throw a fit about. Kelly’s talent far surpasses whoever those other people are.

  2. DoctorWho

    @Tyson – No, you have it completely backwards. Arcade Fire is one of the most innovative groups in music right now. Kelly Clarkson can barely play an instrument, and obviously can’t write songs without ripping off of others. I’m not saying that she has no talent, because she does, but there are far more creative artists out there right now.

  3. Nil

    @Tyson

    Wait, your saying that a pop singer like Kelly Clarkson, who can’t play an instrument, can’t write her own music, became famous through the trash known as reality TV, and whose only talent is singing, has talent that “surpasses” a Alternative/Indie/Art Rock and Indie-Pop band like Arcade Fire, a group of talented, multi-instrumental (each member playing around 8 or more instruments), multi-lingual musicians, who write, and produce, all their own songs, have been named one of the world’s most innovative bands, had more critical acclaim than Kelly, and been named the best (if not, one of the best) bands in the world by music legends, including U2, David Bowie, David Byrne, Bruce Springsteen.

    I’m sorry, but who were you saying was more talented?

  4. Bianca

    Ahah… ahahaha! This poor kid thinks Clarkson’s got more talent than The Arcade Fire!

    Her voice is generic and there is nothing special about it. She doesn’t write her own music so there is nothing commendable about her whatsoever. That isn’t my opinion either, that is objective fact.

  5. Nico

    If you say that Kelly cannot write her own music you are CRAZY!
    Listen to “My December”! The whole album is written and prodcued by Kelly! And the lyrics are INCREDIBLE!
    Sorry, but even if the members can play that much instruments it doesn’t mean that they are super-talented. I mean you can learn playing instruments and don’t have to be gifted. Maybe this 3-year old girl who writes her own music on the piano is gifted, but not 35-year-olds.
    Also Kelly has won 2 grammies, 36 other awards and a lot of more nominations is not talented?
    @Tyson: None of the members of Arcade Fire can play 8 instruments! One can play 6, the rest plays 2 or less ;)

  6. J

    I’m sorry, but in my opinion, what Kelly did was copying a song that have, at least, 6 years old. And the Arcade Fire are not “other people”. If you understand anything about music, you should know that Arcade Fire are much more talented, because they make pure music, they make poetic lyrics, and they don’t get copying others work. That’s stealing, cheating, and lazy-ass thing.

    Cumps, J.

  7. Nil

    @Nico

    Um, it was me who said that they could play 8 instruments, not Tyson. And I never said that Kelly Clarkson wasn’t talented, I was just saying that there was more talent in AF.
    And yes, many of the members can play 8 instruments or more. I’ve got the liner notes for Funeral here in front of me, and Regine Chassagne and Richard Reed Parry are listed with 8 instruments, while Win Butler has seven. More instruments are added if you also list instruments used in their second album and in live performances, and no doubt there will be more with their third album (due out this month). Oh yeah, forgot to mention William Butler has played 13 instruments in Arcade Fire.
    Not to mention they record, produce, engineer, write ad arrange all their own songs.

    I’m in no way trying to say that Kelly isn’t talented, but for some of the previous commenters to call AF “half-butts”, unttalented, unoriginal and suggest Kelly’s talent surpasses theirs, is to me, laughable.

  8. trucle

    hey,NICO,i support u,i believe in kelly.,let’s wait what kelly would say abt this .it would be great if we could be friends (simply we all love kelly),my nick:starlight1512199@yahoo.com.vn

  9. Jphila

    @ Nico

    I believe that Kelly Clarkson has an amazing voice. But that’s where it ends. Her INCREDIBLE lyrics? Do your other favourite artists also include Justin Bieber and Hanson? Because their lyrics are right on par with hers. She’s got a great voice but as an artist? She’s completely produced and a product of the music industry like Lady GaGa… people with music taste like yours should’t be taken seriously. You’re a sheep to the mainstream if you think grammy nominations count worth shit; you know who wins those? People who the music industry spends countless dollars writing for and producing these so-called artists. You’re a slave to what MTV is selling, you would never know what real talent like Arcade Fire has to offer; which I guess is too bad for you. I bet you’re in love with the new Lady Gaga beat aren’t you? I wonder what next week’s MTV’s “greatest artist” will be, you’re new favourite I bet.

  10. Jon

    you got that right her talent far surpasses them but like you said the songs aren’t identical and its nothing to fuss about.

  11. Nico

    @Jphila
    First of all: I do not like Justin Bieber AT ALL
    And yes, i like mainstream music, but just for partying
    Also i said the lyrics on My Decemeber, which are all written by Kelly herself are really really good ones. Of course some of her songs, which are produced by these new “hit-producers” are really mainstream, but they have all a message, and a logical one. not like “you can stand under my umbrella”-stuff.
    And i also occupy myself with the lyrics of song(if these words are right, sorry, but I’m german ;) ) And I listen to kesha and katy perry and stuff, but i also listen to more serious stuff like Queen, The Walkabouts, Kansas, U2, Die Ärzte, Herber Grönemeyer(the last two you won’t know) AND Kelly Clarkson.
    The reason why i am so interested in lyrics is that i can learn english from them. And because i pay attention to the lyrics i can speak english as well as i do.

    PS: i don’t even know who the f*** hanson is :P

  12. Max

    I think its funny that people say a singer is not a musician because they can’t play an instrument. First off, what Kelly can do with her voice is absolutely insane, that is fact. Her range is insane. Plus the amount of music theory, piano, rhythm that goes into being a talented trained singer is what music is all about. To say there is nothing remarkable about her vocal ability is not fact, its your opinion, which obviously is jaded. I never heard of arcade fire, and fail to see any strong similarities between the songs to say she (her producers) ripped off. IF anything they will get more exposure because of this. She needs to release this song because it is amazing.

  13. cristina

    arcade fire is so much better than this mainstream pop wonder, kelly clarkson is a dime a dozen

  14. amanda

    I am a singer with limited instrument playing abilities, but that does NOT mean that I lack talent or that other musicians are MORE talented. I write my own music, and appreciate other musicians whether they can play a million instruments or none at all. To be so stuck up about pop music and disregard it is saying that you are not a fan of music, just a fan of one genre. Variety is out there for a reason. You cannot take the away the emotion a song brings to a person, no matter what station its playing on or who sings it. In regards to the songs, I don’t think they sound enough alike for the fuss, either.

  15. Michael C.

    Although Arcade Fire are talented guys they are so overrated in general. They have made two okay albums and they are great now? I can’t enjoy a full album by them at all. Radiohead is the same way. Overrated bands.

  16. Joe

    @Nico
    I’m looking at the page for My December, and there is not a single song that she wrote by herself (in fact, there are only 2 songs that her and a producer co-wrote, the rest are 3 or more co-writers). Producer David Kahne has a higher billing than Clarkson on producing credits (which her “producing” was probably limited to “I want some more of that” or “make that louder”…).

    I just think that “her” new song is such a blatant rip-off, me and my fiance’s jaws collectively hit the floor. I just hope that Arcade Fire. themselves, find out about this. If they were ready for legal action against the NFL for using No Cars Go without permission, then i’m pretty sure Sony will have to put themselves to the test for the best lawyer money can buy.

  17. Greg

    I agree with Michael C. Arcade Fire and Radiohead have moments of brilliance but overall are nothing to write home about. I’ll take ‘commercial’ U2 over either of them anyday.

  18. red

    its a good song..still if everyone think that its the same with arcade whatsoever song, then she will trash it as soon as possible…she dont want to repeat the already gone ripping off!!! still naked eye is better than lies whatsoever

  19. red

    thanks to kelly arcade will have more fans out there

  20. Gold

    Its a shame she didnt copy the chorus as well, thats when the real magic starts in the “original”.

    I really love that u are even trying to compare theese two. Arcade Fire is among the best composers this decade and kelly is just a really good singer.

    Maby she can do a cover version if she wants to make the original more available to a wider audience.

  21. Nico

    @Joe
    That is totally not right!
    if you could see the booklet of my december you could see that she wrote all the songs and also was the executive producer
    you can also take a look on this page:
    http://www.metrolyrics.com/my-december-album-kelly-clarkson.html
    she wrote them all

  22. ALfan

    Kelly Clarkson wrote on “Miss Independent”, “Because of You”, “Behind These Hazel Eyes”, “Walk Away”, “Never Again”, “Already Gone” ALL and her whole 3rd album. All of these songs were Top 40, most being Top 10. “Because of You” was a no. 1 song in THE WORLD, not just the U.S, and she wrote that one, lyrics and melody, when she was only 16.
    To say she doesn’t write is wishful thinking on the part of what appears to be an ignorant elitist.

  23. angelo bruno

    Naked Eyes doesn’t sound anything like any song by Arcade Fire.

  24. Joe

    @ Nico
    Um, you just further confirmed my statement. Notice those other names after Kelly Clarkson’s? Those are producers/other songwriters who helped her write the songs.

  25. Z

    Ugh at all these doubters. I used to be one of them, though I never thought Kelly has no talent. Just go see and hear the girl sing live. You might choke on your words. KC is phenomenal

  26. Nico

    @Joe
    EVERY song is produced or co-written by others than just the singer itself! I know that there are other names behind Kelly, but she wrote the main part of the lyrics and produced the most of each song.
    And – just look at one of your comments – “their ‘producing’ was probably limited to ‘I want some more of that’ or ‘make that louder’…”

  27. frenchyfri

    Just because it’s the same song does not mean she ripped off Arcade Fire (whoever they are). She probably bought the rights to record the song. And Kelly Clarkson is an amazingly talented artist and performer.

  28. leslie

    I’m a Kelly fan, but My December sounds like a journal kept by a girl in junior high school. Very cheesy writing. I, personally, don’t think it’s good enough to publish. I WANT to like 2 or 3 songs on the album, but they are poorly written with halfway there melodies.

    I’ve never heard of Arcade Fire, but I am gonna download some stuff and see if I like it.

  29. Nil

    @ frenchyfri

    No, she probably did not buy the rights to record the song, because Arcade Fire are not sell outs.

  30. Ponderosa

    Oh man… I just can’t hold back from posting here.

    It amazes me how narrow a scope people can be fed their music these days (especially in a world where any song you like is at your fingertips).

    Clarkson is a voice (and she has a very good one, I will add)… signed by Major labels… used as a tool to sell records. She gets producing credit, songwriting credits etc… but she does NOT produce her music, and she certainly doesn’t write the songs… you know, Chords, structure, melody… pretty much um… the SONG. She probably wouldn’t know a DAW if it hit her in the face. Her voice is an instrument used to sell records and nothing more.

    All of you need a lesson on music. Move outside of mainstream radio and hear what the internet has to offer… real, interesting and challenging music. Things that once you’ve heard them, you’ll have a hard time going back to trite radio friendly earworms like Clarkson’s or any other pop starlet.

    as far as this song goes (Naked Eye)… the verse Chord progression is IDENTICAL to Rebellion (Lies) and the melody is nearly identical. The chorus is different.

    Its a blatant rip off… and if you can’t hear it for yourself then you should just give up and toss on a mini pops album or something.

    Also, any research at all will show you how well regarded AF are. Funeral is widely recognized as one of the greatest albums of the past 10 years, and a top 50 album of all time.

    Get your heads out of your collective asses. (my apologies if you are a teenie-bopper and have yet to understand music on a real level yet… I hope over the years you get to discover the beauty that can be found out there)

  31. Ale

    This isn´t the first time she copy other people!!! ask to Karen O (Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and I love Arcade Fire!!!, Kelly destroy Rebelion Lies!!!

  32. Amanda

    Maybe it’s meant to sound like it’s copying Arcade Fire for a reason?

  33. hleb

    I just wanted to stop by and say, this comment section was hilarious. “Kelly’s talent far surpasses whoever those other people are.” Hahahahaha, but then it gets better when the barely literate Arcade Fire fans start posting arguing that Arcade Fire is somehow “more talented” (like that comment in itself were somehow verifiable and not entirely subjective) because they are bilingual. “They toss around a few French sentences in ‘Haiti’! Boom! Roasted!” That is the definition of a terrible argument.

    For what its worth, Arcade Fire is probably the best band of this generation (and I really don’t think that’s hyperbole) and Kelly Clarkson is pretty talented. But this song is definitely a rip off.

  34. Joe

    @Nico
    I said “HER ‘producing’ was probably…” Also, that is highly incorrect that ALL singers have producer-cowriters. Only singers who can’t tell the difference between a D and a D7 chord.

    Some artists who DIDN’T need producer-cowriters:
    -Pink Floyd
    -The Beatles
    -Bob Dylan
    -And, oh yeah, ARCADE FIRE.

    Musical ignorance will be the death of society, mark my word.

    @Ponderosa

    THANK YOU!

  35. Duck

    umm… have any of you actually listened to this “Arcade Fire” song in question? it sucks. its boring, and its simply bland. and to quote an earlier poster “That isn’t my opinion either, that is objective fact.”

    all of you people say “they are the best in this generation” “they are very highly regarded” “top 50 of all time” etc… but yet theyre so unknown they might as well be a indie garage band. Although Kelly may have copied her song from them, because the above description also fits her song. its definitely not her best work.

  36. Robert

    really? seriously? you guys are pathetic!!!! Kelly’s song doesnt sound anything like Arcade fires…and besides she is far more successful then they are!!! She has sold well over 23 million albums in her career and she may not be able to play an instrument but thats because her voice is her instrument and she is amazing!!! Whoever thinks the two sound the same, need to get their ears checked..If you dont like her, dont listen to her, its as easy as that. So stop hating, and move on!!!

  37. Dan

    Saying Arcade Fire is “some other guys” is extremely ignorant. Arcade Fire is an incredibly talented, unique group.

    On the other hand, dissing Kelly Clarkson is ignorant in the same fashion. She’s had pop success on the basis of her music. She isn’t in the news for losing her clothes or burning crucifixes, and she’s an incredible singer.

    Both are excellent. Kelly Clarkson’s song here does sound like it rips off Rebellion, but that’s okay.

  38. Marcia Marcia

    While I think you are confusing Kelly with someone else. I think that you should really become educated on certain things, if you are talking about Already Gone. Ryan Tedder who is extremely talented provided the track to both Kelly and Beyonce, and Kelly fought not to have the song released as a single, for the very reason you are blabbing about. Her fault nope. She changed the arrangement of the song, when she does it live. Kelly is very talented. I think as far as Pop artists she is the most talented she actually writes with 2 other people at most, unlike some others who have 10 people writing on one song.

  39. Marcia Marcia

    Backing up your point Kelly actually does play the guitar you can catch that on Youtube, although she says she’s still learning, but she is doing it on her own. Anyway it’s like saying Slash is not that talented because he doesn’t sing. Kelly’s instrument is her voice. No one would say that about a guitarist, you shouldn’t really say that about a vocalist. That doesn’t validate either way. She is a talented singer, and song writer. She does her music her way, and not what is popular she really could just do the err Beyonce stuff, and make millions, but she doesn’t.

  40. vonda

    Who is more talented is a completly subjective experience. There is no arguing preference. The only thing I am going to argue is this – that song was stolen off of Kelly’s computer and put out on the internet for everyone to see. We don’t know what she was thinking or feeling or what her intentions were when she recorded that song. Was it made to get some creative juices flowing? To try something different and then progress from there because she respects Arcade Fire? Did she want to pull a complete 180 after calling Ryan Tedder out for his musical duplicitity and make her self look like an ass? Who knows. You don’t. They don’t. I don’t.
    What I do know is that It is not a completed song that was put on an album. It was stolen and probably never meant to be heard (and this song is touted as being a track on her next album and that is an obvious fabrication…since the songs were maliciously stolen).
    So stop judging it like it was a completed work. When her album comes out and this song is on there and she is still blatantly ripping off Arcade Fire you can pick back up your stakes and rope and commence with the hanging.

  41. matt

    you sir , are scum .
    for saying that kelly clarkson has more talent then arcade fire.
    this song is obviously a massive rip off and i think it just shows how untalented mainstream musicians are like her.

  42. Craig

    Wow, Tyson, you ignorant person. I like how you refer to Arcade Fire as the “other people.” What the hell has Kelly Clarkson done in the past two years besides get fat? She hasn’t had a decent song for 3 years, ass.

  43. Kate

    go die

  44. Jonathan

    @Ponderosa

    I understand where you are coming from, talking about pop stars not having a voice, but Kelly Clarkson is NOT one of those artists! She fights for a voice in her music (see: ‘My December’ and the single release of ‘Already Gone’), and her voice is fantastic. Why should there be singers/bands around that don’t have amazing voices? Everyone anti-Kelly here seems to say ‘oh, she can’t play an instrument and doesn’t write her own songs or produce her own music’ (she did/has done all of these things, btw), but why should there be SINGERS and BANDS who can only do these things? If you can write amazing songs, be a songwriter, not a SINGER. Same goes for instruments; use them, and if they aren’t vocals, then play your instrument and don’t sing if you can’t sing, and if you can produce, be a PRODUCER, not a singer.
    Also, stop grouping TALENT as though it is one thing and not an array of things. I’m not aware of Arcade Fire as a band and therefore I have no right to judge them (those who aren’t fully aware of Kelly’s contributions to developing her own music should follow suit). They may be better producers and writers and play more instruments then Kelly. But I doubt they have anyone with stronger vocals then Kelly. Therefore, Kelly is a better SINGER and this band Arcade Fire are probably better at various other things that involve music. It just seems as though a talented vocal is not as highly regarded as the talents that Arcade Fire possess for some reason. If they are as good as most people here seem to think, I wish them success so that more people may be exposed to their music.
    Oh, and the fact that the two songs sound similar to some of you is probably a coincidence that was bound to happen to two artists at some point. I know nothing of Arcade Fire’s song, but this track could have come about before anyone working with Kelly on it or even Kelly herself knew about that other song. It is never intentional when legitimate (yes, she is) artists happen to have similar sounds to others.

  45. Sean

    I listened to the other song and I think it sucked– Kelly’s version is WAY better-

    PS She co writes a lot of her music and she’s super talented– her voice is her instrument- and it’s way more powerful than that indie rock band

  46. Ponderosa

    @Jonathan

    My point isn’t that she can’t sing (I specifically said she is a good singer). The point is that this song contains a verse with a chord for chord copy of Rebellion (Lies) — and that’s a fact. the melody is also nearly identical… there is a very, very slim chance that it was unintentional. This is the sort of thing that is very sad in the world of music.

    Major labels will attempt to release anything that will make them some money, and that includes ripping off riffs, or entire songs.

    as for Clarkson being an instrument, you are bang on. Do you think the Edge and U2 have gained their success simply because he has amazing guitar tones (not unlike Kellys voice)? No, it’s because he uses the instrument to CREATE and play great songs. (BTW, edge has some amazing guitar tones…).

    No one is arguing that Kelly can’t sing, or even that Arcade Fire have better singers than her. That point means nothing… Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan could/can barely sing a note, and well, if you don’t know who they are… again, please just give up and pick up lawn darts to pass your time or something.

    It’s obvious most people on this board are fans of Kellys, and have very little experience with music outside of the tops of the popcharts, or what is forced down their throat by the radio. That alone makes this argument is like trying to convince a Teabagger that Obama isn’t from Nigeria… But nevertheless, try opening your ears. There is SO much music out there to listen to… do a litte searching on the web… you’ll find things that will completely open your mind to something a little …. different. Better. More Interesting. Worth the permanent hearing loss…

    oh, and to any Arcade Fire fans… they just posted two new tracks on their website from their new album coming out in August (its in the little flash record player thing)… enjoy.

  47. Gabi

    Arcade Fire > Clarkson.
    That’s a FACT.
    And Rebellion is a GREAT song.
    She turned the melody in something stupid and empty.

  48. Max

    Thats not a fact, its your opinion and I disagree.

  49. Roy

    Arcade Fire put out one of the best albums of the past 10 years. Kelly Clarkson came from American Idol.

    Huge fans of Arcade Fire include: David Bowie, U2, Coldplay, David Byrne (Talking Heads)

    Do you Clarkson fans listen to Nickleback too?
