Katy Perry And Snoop Dogg Toast The West Coast In “California Gurls”

May 7th, 2010 // 12 Comments

Last week soon-to-be-hitched pop babe Katy Perry tweeted that she was at the photo shoot for the cover of her upcoming single “California Gurls,” and noted that “there couldn’t be more color…” And while we’re not sure if the artwork above is official, it sure is vivid. So now the Max Martin/Dr. Luke-produced jam itself—which features rap’s slick lumberjack Snoop Dogg—has now surfaced. Listen after the jump!

“Greetings, loved ones—let’s take a journey,” Snoop says in the intro to “California Gurls.”

Perry then begins to toast the “golden coast” buy singing about sun, Daisy Dukes and bikinis. She even throws a nod to a classic hit from the Doggfather: “Sipping gin and juice, laying underneath the palm trees.”

Katy Perry feat. Snoop Dogg - California Gurls

“It’s so great that ‘Empire State of Mind’ is huge and that everyone has the New York song, but what the f**k? What about LA? What about California?” Katy recently said to Rolling Stone. “It’s been a minute since we had a California song and especially from a girl’s perspective. We took the references of Prince, which is always a great reference, and some of the ’90s, almost house music references.”

Some listeners are actually hearing a “TiK ToK” vibe in “California Gurls,” though what do you expect—Dr. Luke cooked up the beats for that one, as well.

At any rate, Katy, Max Martin and Dr. Luke struck gold with “I Kissed A Girl” two summers ago. What do you think—is “California Gurls” going to be another #1 hit?

I’m sure it’ll be a hit! It’s a great summer song! Actually, it just got me a bit excited for summertime.

And I loved the “Sippin’ on gin and juice” line. Thought it was great.

    mediocre – as expected

This song is amazing!! I really hope it gets to no. 1!! Can’t wait for katy’s album to come out ;)

  4. Ron

    Katy,

Ron here. Guess what? I kissed a girl, too. And, I liked it. Sounds to me like we have a lot in common. We also have marriage in common. You are getting married, and I am not. I think that is reason to celebrate, if you know what I mean. I’ll be waiting.

The song is sick. Should be a # 0 on the charts. (Stupid math trick, David.) Wish you lots of luck, with both the song and the marriage. Hope you’re not sores. I hate it when that happens. Really.

I heard Ke$ha say she was, and was not, a friend of yours. I kind of thought that, too, but would not dream of saying it out loud. She is loud and confident and smart. I am quiet, and quite interested in that intricately colored device into which you have so delicately and lovingly placed the sun kissed fruits of another’s labor. What a pair.

The song took me back to the summer of 1970, when I met my first California girl. I even remember her name. She was unlike any girl I had seen. She looked and smelled like heaven. And as do the occupants of heaven, she cast me aside in favor of another. I was only 12 or 13, and my brother was six years older. She was sixteen. I hope your song allows others to get what I did not, and am not.

Snopp Dogg changes the vibe in a good way. Although to really get it I had to listen to the stream from your site. The song really is dope.

The art killed me. It seemed to me to be a weird mix of H.R.Giger and Fernando Botero’s Circus, with a touch of Doris Kloster. Compliments to the artist.

Remember to ask your beau what love is, before the wedding.

    Joy to you, Rose.

  5. Pinchies

This is one of the worst songs I have ever heard. The lyrics are so cheesy I can barely stand to listen to them. She is a very talented artist and this song is a piece of crap at best. The idea was there, but the execution fell way way short. Such a lazy song. So terrible.

  6. Cal--E-Forn-Ya Boi!

This song is awesome! I’ve been listening to it nonstop for an hour! I’m not that big of a fan of Snoop Dogg’s part (IMO, rappers slow down pop songs and usually take away the fun) but it’s not bad. I can totally see me and my friends jamming out to this on a road trip (In our home of CALIFORNIA! yeah BABY!!)

  9. Kid P

this song is sick! screw pinchies!!

  10. Jason

This is a really really bad song by an “artist” that has so little talent it’s uncomfortable to watch. She can’t perform live, sings horribly and dances even worse.

She is nice to look at but, good god, stay off the stage.

Factoring in the longevity of Snoop’s career dating back to 91-92,this last record album dogumentary deserves a solid 4.After 20 years and there’s still something on the record album for everybody to bang and the music songs are from each one distinguishable from each other..but these years people would kind of congratulate the absolute majority of the crap..if you were even born after Snoop’s first record album came out don’t even comment.
