‘Idol’ Guest Blog: Bo Bice Turns The Spotlight On The Top 4
The performances by Idol‘s Top 4 on movie night were like most of the films churned out of Hollywood—entertaining, but ultimately forgettable and not worth the price of a movie ticket, dinner, and popcorn. Are any of these singers really ready for stardom or the glare of the Hollywood spotlight? We figured there would be no one more qualified to address that question than one of Idol‘s original rock stars: the one and only Bo Bice.
Rising from underdog status on Season 4 (when Constantine Maroulis filled the “rocker” role early on), Bo delivered a pitch-perfect performance of Ides of March’s “Vehicle” and a glorious acapella rendition of Badlands’ “In A Dream,” transforming him into a clear finalist.
Bo hasn’t slowed down since Idol. The southern rock singer is about to release his third album, 3, which he recorded with former Black Crowes drummer Steve Gorman and keyboardist AJ Croce, whose father Jim was one of Bo’s biggest inspirations. Bo also recently pitched in to raise money for Nashville flood relief. We’re deeply honored that he was willing to share his thoughts on Idol’s Top 4 performances with us. Bo’s Review:
Well, Well, Well… Idol does movie soundtrack night and none of the contestants did the theme from Blades Of Glory?!?!?! Which leaves me thinking, this show is rigged!!!! But I digress. Now that I have picked up the pieces of my shattered heart, let’s focus on the Top 4’s performance night.
Jamie Foxx, who is one of my favorite actors/singers/comedians, did a great job as a mentor this week. Harry Connick Jr. is a hard act to follow, but Jamie gave him a run for his money. His mix of humor and intensity helped the singers open up. You could see that from the very start while working with Lee on his first song, he was up in Lee’s face making him focus on the relationship of the song. Kudos Mr. Foxx!
First out of the gate was Lee Dewyze singing “Kiss From a Rose.” I am a fan of Lee and I am proud that he made it this far. However, I’m not sure that this was in the right key for him. The falsetto was a little off and he didn’t throw the sauce on it like I think he could have. Plus, Lee, don’t know if you know it buddy, but you are on one of the biggest shows in history; dress like it.
Second up… Michael Lynche, “Big Mike.” He performed “Will You Be There.” Mike started out kind of timid, but after he got into it, he smoked. I don’t think it was the best performance I’ve seen from Mike but I still think it was good. I’m rooting for ya, BM!
Third was Casey James. He sang “Mrs. Robinson.” I think Casey did a great job and the mandolin added a different element. I dug how he changed the tone and dynamic of his voice in the second half of the song. Could have used a more climatic finish, but overall it was good.
Last but not least, Crystal Bowersox singing “I’m Alright.” Kenny Loggins is an incredible writer and artist and this is a great song choice. Crystal did an awesome job but my biased heart must also give credit to Teddy Campbell and his funky soul that was all over this thing, and Rickey Minor’s arrangement; you would be a fool not to love this song. FuNkY!!!
Now let’s duet! Lee and Crystal’s voices blend nicely and they both sounded strong on “Falling Slowly.” I think they made a good song choice and they were a good duet team. But I think that Casey James and Big Mike with their dueling guitars did an unbelievable rendition of “Have You Really Ever Loved a Woman.” As a team, they did a stand-up job. Two different style voices that accented each other well. I think they showed their chops on this tune.
My overall consensus is that the Top 4 did an outstanding job and it’s gonna be an exciting road to the finale. With three of my picks to win from the start in the Top 4 right now, you know I’ll be watching.
