‘Glee’ Stars And Green Day Rock The Tonys With Some Theatricality

Matthew Morrison Tony Awards TonysDid you ever think you’d see the day where Broadway-stars-turned-TV-stars would continually be clogging the upper reaches of the pop charts while a California punk rock band would be the catalyst for an award-winning Broadway musical? Well, okay—if you can suspend your disbelief enough to follow the Glee storylines each week, then all that other stuff isn’t too hard to imagine. Head below to watch Green Day and said Fox series’ Matthew Morrison (thankfully he didn’t rap) and Lea Michele perform on last night’s Tony Awards.

Matthew Morrison performed Gypsy’s “All I Need Is The Girl,” which was followed by his Glee co-star/fellow seasoned Broadway thesp Lea Michele doing Barbra Streisand’s “Don’t Rain On My Parade.”

And here’s the American Idiot cast performing “Boulevard Of Broken Dreams,” followed by Green Day themselves doing “Holiday” and “Know Your Enemy.” Love the moment at 3:59 when Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones are clapping along and looking a bit confused (and probably thinking, my how the Tonys have changed). American Idiot picked up Tonys for Best Scenic Design and Best Lighting Design.

  1. Billie Joe Armstrong was ADORABLY awkward when he introduced the American Idiot cast. Like he had never, ever stepped in front of a mic and read from a teleprompter before. (There’s a good chance he hasn’t, though.)
