PHOTOS: Nick Jonas Makes London Stage Debut In ‘Les Misérables’

June 22nd, 2010 // 7 Comments

Nick Jonas made his West End debut in Les Misérables at the Queens Theatre in London last night, but it wasn’t his first experience with the beloved  musical—Nick played the pint-sized soldier Gavroche on Broadway in 2003 when he was 11. Now all growns up, Nick fills the role of the lead romantic interest Marius, and with his mature, deep vocals (which you can listen to over at Oh No They Didn’t), the youngest JoBro thrilled theatergoers, including his supporting big bros Kevin and Joe. (We’re sure there were a few screaming girls there, too.) Flip through our gallery to check out the JoBro continuing his solo career with a solid turn on stage. Hey, if Scarlett Johansson can win a Tony, a Jonas Brother one day scoring one isn’t such an outlandish idea, is it?

He really did. My mother went to this and said that he didn’t sound like himself, but WAY better.

he sucked big time. he doesnt have the voice for the role. go back and watch mark belle sing “empty chairs and tables” in the 1995 anniversary and you will see great singing. nick should never had been there

I am watching the dismal display of dainty-voice Nick Jonas right now. Everyone else has strong “musical” voices. Not Nick, sorry, bud, not for you. For those who do not think so, listen to some other Les Mis musical recordrings, original cast or not. I have seen Les Mis 4 times, once on Broadway, once in London, and twice with the travelling cast. I am sure there are roles Nick may be able to play, but not this. May need some acting lessons as well.

I disagree. I feel we watched him grow up onstage. “Empty Chairs” was as well performed as most before him, bellowing nelicose bravado in the great spirit of many performers. Cudos for branching out.

He’s a cute guy, but no way did his vocals do justice to Les Miserables…in fact, his vocals were so poor in comparison to the highly trained voices that they stuck out like a sore thumb. He ruined a beautiful show. And all for ego and a buck. Sad.

I grew up with Les miserables and marius isn’t supposed to be some big tough guy. He’s the romantic, idealistic student. So yes, Nick’s vocals could’ve been stronger but casting him wasn’t a mistake and he didn’t ruin the show at all because he is Marius. To me he looks like him, he acts like him, he IS him. Well done Nick!

Nick Jonas had the same effect on me in the 25th anniversary film as Gareth Gates did in the 25th anniversary live UK tour…..just dull. I blame the director, why would you put weak pop singer amongst professionally trained theatre singers who have the depth and power to perform songs live. Nick and Gareth both paled in comparison to not only the other male performers but also the female singers. Even the ensemble singers who have one or two lines can project their voices in a way that these two boys will never be able to do.
