Susan Boyle’s Cover Of Lou Reed’s “Perfect Day”: Listen To It Now

September 10th, 2010 // 57 Comments

Earlier today we wrote about the alleged smackdown Lou Reed gave Susan Boyle with regards to her planned performance of his song “Perfect Day” on yesterday’s episode of America’s Got Talent. And while the masses were denied hearing SuBo sing the 1972 ballad, we’ve got her recorded version of the song for your listening pleasure below.

Susan Boyle - Perfect Day

Boyle’s official site has a new update stating the following:

“Yesterday afternoon Susan was due to perform a chosen song from her new album The Gift on America’s Got Talent in Los Angeles. It is with real disappointment and regret that she has been unable to do so due to unforeseen circumstances relating to the song.

“Susan is very disappointed as she had been looking forward to it immensely. She is now on a plane heading back to London with a heavy heart. She would like to say thank you to all those fans who traveled miles to lend their support today.

“Your support is really appreciated by Susan and please be assured every effort was made to try to find a solution. Susan really looks forward to being able to perform her new songs very soon.”

As noted earlier, those “unforseen circumstances relating to the song” involve Reed saying no to Boyle’s performance on AGT because he “doesn’t like” the singer, according the UK paper The Sun.

So what do you think? Now that you’ve heard Susan’s cover, is it much ado about nothing? Or should Lou take a walk on the wild side and let the Britain’s Got Talent alum belt out his tune on TV?

  1. cee

Ethereal and beautiful. Suze has done it again!

  2. CJ

That’s an awful rendition, Lou Reed was right to stop SUBO from singing his masterpiece. Some modern classics should be left alone.

  3. carol

Stunning! No wonder this man did not want Susan to perform this song. It puts any performance of his to shame. Such emotion and intensity and that glorious voice.

  4. AOK

It is beautifully done – whatzhisname should be proud to have Susan cover his song.

  5. Linda

No wonder Lou Reed wouldn’t allow her to sing it on AGT! Her rendition is far superior to his! Beautiful job by Susan!!

  6. wendy

Susan has transformed the song with her beautiful rendition.

can’t wait to get the CD

  7. Dot

Lou, you will reap what you sow. You have done it now and bad luck will come your way by the way you have treated the best singer in the world. Just look at yourself, you’re death warmed over and it looks like curtain time any minute.

At least you could of been nice and let Susan sing this song, but Jealousy got in the way. You’ve become a mean old man whereas in the past you were a young mean and miserable man. There is no hope for you. You’re a lost soul. God help you before you kick the bucket.

  8. KathyM

OMG, absolutely gorgeous, of course I wouldn’t have expected anything less from Susan Boyle. There isn’t anything that she can’t make sound amazingly beautiful.

  9. To hear Susan’s stunning voice is always a thrill. Too bad she wasn’t able to perform this on AGT.

  10. CJ

Lou is awesome, terrible dress sense, but way to superb to let SUMO ruin all his hard work.

  11. Kate

Really did not think anyone could sing this and make be me love it…some have been so awful in the past. Well, Susan Boyle has done it! What a classy voice. Her new cd will undoubtedly be amazing…again!

  12. Susan’s rendition of this song is beautiful

  13. andy

cj must suck to be you, masterpiece when NOT sung by the worst singer ever to walk the planet earth. Reed is absolute garbage period. wtg susan excellent. she has done to this what she did to wild horses, so cj go cry in your beer pal

  14. crackers

I was there at AGT to hear this song sung by Susan. I thought I missed out but now that I have heard it, I have forgotten about all the disappointment. Susan, you are a class act and you never disappoint your fans!

  15. Altarflame

Lou Reed will eat crow with not allowing her to sing it live. I bet right now he’s kicking himself in the arse because he will loose out on a lot of money.
Sony did the right thing to leak this song.

  16. I just love it. Susan sound sweet, beautifull, ethereal. She can take any song and make it her own. Susan has done it again. I can wait to listen to the whole CD.WOW!

  17. Misti

WOW! Oh Susan! When I first heard Lou’s song I wondered how on earth even YOU could make that song beautiful but I knew that somehow you would.. .and you DID! It is absolutely stunning! Yes, Sony was wise to leak this out to us!

  18. KathyM

Susan, beautiful as it is, pull it from your album so the miserable S O B doesn’t earn anything.
If your CD sells even half what the first one did, he’ll be kicking himself hard.
Funny he approved that so he’d get a share of the profits. He doesn’t deserve them.

  19. CBill

Susan’s exquisite voice has transformed this song into an anthem! Utterly beautiful – for me this is Susan having perfect days now – and all those who mocked, ridiculed and bullied her will ‘reap what they sow’. Bravo Susan Boyle!

  20. cats4me

Susan Boyle has such a beautiful voice she can a soso song and make it a worldwide hit.Lou Reed it’s too bad you’re are such a jerk.Oh is that EGG on your prune face Lou?

  21. cats4me

Meant to say Susan can sing any soso song and it will be a worldwide hit. What was that guys name again Lou whats his name, never heard of him before and for sure don’t care to now or ever. But I’ll listen to and love anything Susan Boyle decides to sing because this lady can transform any old song and make it sound absolutely beautiful.

  22. Wow, I love it, LOVE IT, LOVE IT. I am crying here, it is just too beautiful. I am speechless. Lou Reed, please let Susan sings it on America’s Got Talent.

  23. Lu

That was absolutely beautiful!! How unfortunate it was that Susan wasn’t allowed to sing this on AGT, but on second thought, maybe not! This way the song might get more world-wide exposure!

  24. Lu

Susan has never said a bad word about anyone, that I know of, even those who bullied her at school, so let’s give Lou Reed the benefit of the doubt, and not vilify him. It certainly was a major snafu, but might not have anything to do with him personally! I hope, when Lou and his lawyers hear Susan’s beautiful rendition, they won’t hesitate to give her permission to sing “A Perfect Day” in the US!

  25. LoriMB

This is hauntingly beautiful and her voice gives me chills. I, too, was at AGT and was so sad to not see her and to not hear her sing this.

  26. I finally know why Lou Reed didn’t want Susan Boyle sing in on America’s Got Talent. If I were him, I would be jealous too. This cover is just too beautiful, I found myself kept hiting the replay button. I am speechless. I love it.

  27. Bonnie

No wonder this woman garnered millions of fans and turned the music industry upside down. She took this song to new heights, new dimensions. I look forward to hearing her new CD.

  28. Leslie

This cover is really beautiful! I had my doubts when I listened to the original! Good on you Susan! I’m anxiously looking forward to your new CD!

  29. Griffin

Beautifully sung. Hope he lets her sing it

  30. Elizabeth

This is a tremendous rendition of the song! It is difficult to comprehend why and how it got this far and then suddenly stopped. If Lou Reed did not want Susan to sing it, why did he wait until it had been recorded and she flew all the way to LAX to stop it? I just can’t imagine Susan, Simon and AGT getting it this far without having an agreement. The whole thing does not make sense to me.

  31. Land of Fire

I’m speechless. Boyle’s version of this song is so hauntingly beautiful. Would it be that he heard this version and he got afraid of people totally forgeting about him and only remember Susan Boyle’s version for the years to come. Very probably.

  32. ZMH

rejecting a cover request is okay. but if everything in that report is true, i don’t understand why lou has to put it in such a classic douche way. just make up some stupid reasons, and leave the talented woman alone.

  33. Marti

Never heard of Lou Reed and never heard this song before, but it sounds like it must have been written for Susan Boyle. I can’t imagine another singer anywhere in the world singing it better than this. Her voice is so emotional, passionate and touching she creates a masterpiece with every song she sings.

  34. Entropydecides

Gorgeous. A reflection of a happy moment in the past when home was where two people
would end a perfect day. “Home” was never such a beautiful destination. She sings “such fun” as if it were only a moment in a distant memory. I’ve always liked Lou Reed’s song,,,,but Susan brings it home. An amazing woman, a complex woman.
I’m sorry Lou didn’t let her sing, but thanks for the song.

  35. Entropydecides

Lou, sometimes the things you create take on a life of there own. When this happens, you are successful. Let it go Lou. If you would only change your mind, you might find that you like yourself better, and that’s okay.

  36. Brian

After the investigation was done, Lou had nothing to do with the problem. It was a legal paper work problem that did not get sorted out in time. They are many others here to blame than Lou. Having that said, my opinion is that most people out there, including Susan, do not realize this song is about Heroin addiction. I do not think the song fits her. Hearing Susan sing the context is more distrubing than the context itself.

A simple little song full of nostalgia about one day nwhen two people left behind their cares and had a lovely day just being happy in each other’s company. But then the ominous warning at the end makes one wonder if this day was a very brief respite from impending consequences of previous actions.

Beautifully sung by Susan, but the backing singers were too loud and the orchestration overdone for the simplicity of the song.

  39. Mike

Meh, it’s an OK version. But I want to know why Reed is suddenly so picky. He didn’t seem to mind letting AT&T use the song for a TV ad during the Olympics (because you know, hearing a song about heroin addition makes me think of cell phones)

  40. Carroll Reyn

The grim and menacing instrumental intro does not conjure up images of a perfect day. Suan’s voice is spectacular, but I really don’t understand the scary intro or the closing admonition about reaping and sowing.

  41. robert stephenson

The backing seems to drown her at times, but that apart another classic display from a great talent. Look forward to hearing actual track on CD. Subo don’t let the critics get you down. They’re used to hearing singers who sing through their nose and are out of tune. Somebody who can actually sing comes as a great surprise to them.

  42. Mags

Why are the public giving bad press to Lous. It is not his fault that Subo and her Management Team did not sort out the legalities of the song choice well in advance of performing in another country. It looks like all the blame is getting put on Lou to gain the public’s sympathy vote for the devoted Fanatical Subo fans attention and to cover up Miss Boyl’e unprofessional outbursts of behaviour in public places due to Lou upsetting her but this behaviour seems to be taking a pattern more than once and a new issue. What a shame a talented songwriter is getting dragged through the coals because of this. It is his song anyhow and after all this he should refuse his song to be sung after all the trouble Subo and Team have brought him.

  43. Vaunda

This song does not do justice to your incredible vocal talent..Susan..stop singing someone else’s creations…you have the ability to blow your audience out of the water…sing about your life..in your own words..to your own sound…I know talent when I hear it…I bust out in goosebumps EVERY time..this song was average..did nothing..I want to hear the talent that made me STOP in my tracks..do a double take..sit down..and listen as my entire body erupted in goosebumps..

  44. pjm

Not sure how many of those commenting have followed Reed and his music. Similar perhaps to a Leonard Cohen, Lou’s music and lyrics are more than voice — though Reed’s voice might not be idylic to some, it is raw, lives with an edge not unsimiliar to the old NYC, and is uncompromisingly true. Though i enjoy some of Ms. Boyles music and like the 100 million plus who have seen it, i was blown away by her first performance on Talent., Perfect Day is not right for her; there is no edge there that evidences an understanding of “i thought i was . . . someone good”. If Ms. Boyle understands that line and what it means, the song, from Ms. Boyle’s voice, might have edge that makes it true. I must agree with and understand Reed’s decision. The song must be true — Lou also sang it with rene fleming (she has an o.k voice (wink)) and pavarotti (who could sing now and then) both can be seen on YouTube.

  45. aiko

    What a glorious rendition!

  46. KathyM

You say this song is average, I think it’s BELOW average, it sounds like it was written by a 5 year old and Reed should have been glad that she wanted to sing it.
She had the #1 album in the world last year, so he’ll make a few dollars from it.
Boyle’s vocals here are so stunning that it makes it sound fantastic.
No matter how vile people talk about her, if they can’t at least admit that they she can sing, they have a real problem.

  47. Festring

LOL…it’s true. Not to mention that he’s a crusty old bag.

  48. mila

Please let susan sings as many songs as she can. After listening to her first album, I believe God has given her that magical power to bring new life for every song she sings. I never stop just to listen to a particular singer as i have plenty of work to be done but her voice eliminates my stress, worries and anxieties. I can feel how beautiful is life no matter how hard it maybe, whenever i hear her voice and singing whatever song it is. Her music is an inspiration, a medicine for me. Of the many singers in this world, it is only her voice that touches my life so much. It is a gift that God has given to me.

PLEASE DO NOT HATE HER. We need her music.

  49. sugar puddin

On first hearing I didn’t like this song. After several times it begins to grow on you. Susan’s voice is like that. Addictive. It is not my favorite song but she does a great job. Too over orchestrated though. Tends to drown out that gorgeous voice.

  50. olracUK

It is such a simple song and melody, but this seems just a touch too sugary. I can see why Lou didn’t like it – takes the “bitter sweet” edge away and leaves nothing but syrup.

Subo does musical theatre really well, I’ve loved some off her previous songs. But the producers have her in this vein now and are mining it to death.

Still, it will sell in the millions, Lou Reed will earn another few bucks as the song writer so he really should see the light and let her sing it. Afer all – the BBC charity version did allright too.
