‘American Idol’ Seeking Friends On MySpace—Fox Searches For Singers Online

Facebook has a movie. Twitter has Kanye West. MySpace has… American Idol? Fox is now giving possible contestants for the singing competition the choice to audition via MySpace (which like Fox itself is also owned by News Corp.) instead of waiting hours upon hours inside a stadium with thousands of other groggy hopefuls.

Til October 6, anyone between the ages of 15 and 28 and upload a 40-second video of them singing a tune (from a pre-approved list of song choices, mind you) onto the show’s MySpace page for consideration. Fox will pick select hopefuls from the inevitably humongous batch of videos and invite them to Los Angeles for a callback.

So will this new option for auditioning change the show in any major way? Not really—utilizing the Internet is just another outlet for producers to cherrypick either brilliant or entertainingly awful auditioners to parade in front of the revamped judges table. This may, however, inspire more people to audition for the show now that they don’t have to wake up at 4 a.m. and miss a day of work or school to do it.
