David Letterman has had thousands of guests sit beside him over the years on the Late Show. But last night was probably the first time he told one of them that they smell like “expensive wood.” Pop’s “Mean” girl Taylor Swift, who grew up on a Christmas tree farm in Pennsylvania, hit up the program to promote her new album Speak Now, but she probably didn’t expect to wind up talking pine with Dave. Poor Taylor seemed a little taken aback at Dave’s, uh, compliment. “I smell like a tree, is what you’re saying?” she asked.

“You know, they say before you have a massive stroke, you smell ham. It’s one of those deals,” Letterman replied. “Tell me it’s not that!”

Well, hey—it wasn’t exactly the same type of interview she did on the Today Show yesterday. But at least it was far more interesting.
