After an all time low debut for an American Idol winner on the Billboard Top 200 last week, Lee DeWyze’s situation has gone from bad to super bad in just seven days. The 2010 champ’s Live It Up initially entered the chart at #19 on sales of just 39,000 copies. Scroll down a bit—make that a mile—now and you’ll see poor Lee has dropped to #93. Holy Diana DeGarmo! Idol Chatter notes that Live It Up‘s sales plunged by 62% in week two (15,000 copies). But in looking at the bright side, he’s still got those paint shop skills, right?

Part of the reason is the media will not give the guy a break and stop posting the negative sales over and over again so no, people are not rushing out to buy the album and it’s a shame cause its a great CD. Maybe, just maybe if they media, such as yourself wrote a positive review about the quality of the music rather than the low sales then people would buy the album…WOW what a novel thought!
We post about album sales every week, and ‘Live It Up’ was out a full week before any sales were mentioned, naturally.
The problem seems to be that he’s not really landing any high-profile gigs on TV shows to promote the album. Nicki Minaj was on every show imaginable last week, and Cee Lo, whose album has been out for nearly a month, is all over the place this week. This should also be the time Lee is doing TV specials, talk shows, etc.
Then RCA and the rest of them are not doing their job. He should be all over the place, he is awesome. I also feel that media is constantly on his case from the day he won the title, and not in a good way. In the meantime, positive reviews would most likely help the sales while all the negative talk gives the writers of those articles more hits I guess and more room to practice their sarcasm. What did he ever do to anyone? There is an ocean of people on the radio and TV who don’t posess a fraction of his talent. The problem is that Joe sixpack looks at the negative stuff and does not bother to see for himself.
One of the problems (besides a lack of media appearances) is that Lee needs positive reviews… and his album did not receive that many overwhelmingly positive reviews. There’s the rub with that theory.
His second week drop was well within the range of what is normal. The problem is that his first week was so low that even a normal drop seems drastic. Re promo, Lee got promo. He simply failed to interest people in what he had to sell, and in who he was.
The music industry is no more than a big popularity contest these days. It doesn’t even matter whether you’re a good singer/musician anymore. People expect a masterpiece from idol winners, yet 90% of the popular artists out there can’t hold a mike without autotune! I could care less about album sales or popular opinion, Kris Allen, David Cook and Lee Dewyze sings the type of music I enjoy, and as long as they continue doing that I’ll buy their music!
I can not understand the constant bad publicity. I love the CD and Lee is very talented. I think he does not have the right people promoting him.
Lee has had a lot of negative press from the day he won so it’s been an uphill battle from the get go. He hasn’t been promoted well. When you have a lot of negative press, it’s hard to flurish. I do think he’s incredibly talented but has the wrong people backing him. They are trying to mold him into something that he’s not in order to make huge record sales and it’s backfiring. I think he’ll be able to prove himself when his contract is over with AI. You can sense his enormous talent with his first two albums but this album is generic.
Buy it and make sure own decision. Don’t let the negative reviews influence you. I did buy it and I love it…..
Every one of you is correct, he has bad promoters. I love his new song and I am giving his cd’s as gifts. He will get more fans as his songs get out. He is on VH1 right now and that is helping so vote on that fans and we will prove the media wrong!
I agree he doesn’t have the right promoters. When Kelly Clarkson won and Carrie Underwood we heard them constantly on the radio and everyone knows Adam Lambert not based on his singing skills (sorry don’t like him) but his antics out there in the press, still he’s getting press, right? I have not heard anything much since Lee won which is a shame. But I will say guys you have to also self promote yourself, Lee knows this from having previous albums under his belt. If you don’t jump into promoting your own work nobody will feel you even care about you are trying to sell.
I bought his cd, Sweet Serendipity is a fun song and I love it. Crystal’s album Farmer’s Daughter is also great. But if you aren’t making appearances you won’t be headlining concerts like Carrie Underwood who jumped into traveling with Rascal Flatts after she won.
Sell yourself!
Lee still can make it man…..i believe in him.
Good luck man………
Lee’s album is great. It is just the right mix of pop and folk rock. His style reminds me a lot of John Mayer. I say give the guy a break. He really is a natural talent with a great voice.
