If you listen closely enough, you just might detect a common link between the best songs on your iPod/iPhone/Android/Zune these days — it’s a distinctive sound, as if pop music had been imagined by a psychedelic rock keyboardist playing in a jazz club floating in deep space. It’s the sound of producer Jeff Bhasker, whose production and songwriting credits include Alicia Keys’ “Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart”, T.I. & Jay-Z’s “Swagga Like Us”, Jay-Z’s Grammy-winning “Run This Town” and extensive work with Kanye West on both 808s & Heartbreak and the collection many consider the best album of 2010, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.
In the new edition of our Digging video series, we follow Jeff as he returns to his roots in Socorro, New Mexico and explains how someone from a very small town developed a very, very big sound.

What is the last song that plays?
Jeff Bhasker tweeted that it’s a song from his solo project Billy Kraven. Can’t wait to hear that.
You’re quick on the draw, John – it’s called “Negative World”, and you can hear the full version here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPhDThML6R0

What’s that keyboard he’s using at the end of the video…together with laptop?
Thanks!

Great stuff. I can not describe how very much your blog has helped me in my academic research on the topic. I am now going to get top marks for certain. Thanks a million. I owe you 1.
