Who knew the “It Gets Better” campaign would become a musical genre in the pop world? There’s been a copious amount of new songs out recently that touch on either celebrating your individuality (Ke$ha’s “We R Who We R”, Pink’s “Raise Your Glass”) or blasting your critics who try to put you down (Sky Ferreira’s “Haters Anonymous”, Taylor Swift’s “Mean”). Selena Gomez manages to do both in her new single “Who Says”, which premiered on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show this morning. Listen below.

“Who says, who says you’re not perfect? Who says you’re not worth it? Who says you’re the only one who’s hurting?” sings Selena on the tune that sounds more Taylor Swift-ian than not. “Trust me / That’s the price of beauty / Who says you’re not pretty / Who says you’re not beautiful / Who says.”
Looks like Selena dropped her club vibe present on “A Year Without Rain” and is going the genuine, organic self-empowerment route, encouraging young people to stop hating and start loving. Are you listening, all you bitter Beliebers?
I’ve got to be honest, if you compare Sky Ferreira’s “Haters Anonymous” with this track, there is not contest. This is a teen pop single. Sky’s track has outstanding production, actually song writing from Sky, a great vocal, witty lyrics, and is a real original piece. I don’t know, Selena just is very wishy-washy, and needs to make up her mind about what kind of singer she wants to be. It’s just hard to believe Selena and Sky are the same age, considering one is an immature Disney star, and the other is putting out songs that slaughter most modern pop singles. Selena’s talented, but she needs to show her true self in her music more. Which starts with songwriting. Something she never does. She has potential, she needs to grow up and get more gritty before she becomes interesting.
