Christina Aguilera Talks About National Anthem Goof On ‘Ellen’

While promoting The Voice (premiering tonight!) on Ellen DeGeneres this morning, Christina Aguilera spoke publicly about both her new boyfriend Matt Rutler (“There’s someone very lovely in my life)”, and how she can laugh at herself about messing up the words to the National Anthem at the Super Bowl. “That night I knew, I just made myself a Trivial Pursuit question: ‘In 2011, what female singer flubbed the lyrics?’ Watch her sit-down with Ellen below.

“I’ve been singing that song my entire life,” Christina says of “The Star-Spangled Banner”. “I was known as the youngest anthem singer in my hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.”

So what happened? “You know, I took in the moment a little bit too much… Shoot me for appreciating the moment, but I was like, Here I am at the Super Bowl, singing for a team and in front of the world, and remembering what it was like to be that young and look where I made it now.”

She says she knew it was going to be a big deal as soon as she finished singing, and a member of the press immediately asked her how it felt to flub the lyrics.

“I knew that the press was just going in for the kill with it… shoot me, I sang it live! I’m human, what can I say?”

Yes, people. If anyone out there is still angry at Xtina for rearranging the lyrics, we think it’s time to let bygones be bygones and let this one go.
