Twangy teens Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina (as well as a hodgepodge of musical superstars) took the stage tonight at the Nokia Theater as America tuned in to the Idol finale find out who would be crowned the champion of the show’s 10th season. Scotty was initially introduced on the show as a novelty (a kid with a deep voice!) with a running joke (singing the Josh Turner song “My Man” at almost every turn). But he proved himself as a true showman, consistently delivering pitch-perfect performances every week, regardless of the theme. (Sure, he always stuck to his country roots, but the man knows what he’s good at.) And in the end, he reeled in a majority of the all-time record 122.4 million votes cast in the final showdown, which pitted two of Idol‘s youngest finalists ever against one another.

Though we’d put Scotty’s initial reaction pretty far down on our list of the Best American Idol Winning Moments Ever (maybe right between Jordin Sparks and Taylor Hicks), we did end up caving after his performance of his single “I Love You This Big” when Scotty tried to eat the falling confetti and eventually teared up while Lauren attacked him with kisses.

Definitely deserved it! Past 4 years my fave of the top 2 WON!!!! David Cook best of the best!!!! Would have loved Casey in the final 2 though, but since he wasn’t, SO glad Scotty WON!!! Talented AND a great person! Very cool!
well we allnow know for sure american idol is NOT a singing competition its a teenie bopper popularity contest..judges should have more power in the voting process,although that too would be subject to much controversy i think that someone like pia tuscano wouldnt be voted off before scotty mcreery, i mean really that girl clearly was the best of them all in every way. but, on the other hand it doesnt seem to matter in terms of future success if you win the thing or not, for instance, chris daughtry/reuben studdard. daughtry didnt win but not a day goes by that i dont here him on the radio. even the last winner lee whats his name, he is essentially a has been already and he hasnt even started. futhermore i would say that it is arguable that winning the thing dooms one to be forever known as the american idol winner and hence never acheiving an autonymous identity as an independent artist, kinda like ralph macchio will never be known as anything else but “the karate kid”. anyway, hope this all made some sense to somebody out there,lol, but good luck to scotty anyway, he is a nice well mannered, good natured, God fearing, all american southern boy whom i am genuinely happy to see succeed in this business..peace and God Blesss you all.

no he shouldn’t have won. someone who can take any song and make it country because thats all he can sing didnt deserve to win. one day he is going to swallow that mike. he will be just like the last few winners, who were they again….

Scotty sucks. hes the worst idol winner. at least the last few gave variety and was more relatable to ALL ameriacans rather country fans. Haley should have won but i would have settled for Lauren because at least she can sing and could most likely sing in other genres.
