Adele Grabs Chart Throne Back From Lady Gaga While ‘Book Of Mormon’ Soars

June 15th, 2011 // 6 Comments

Adele has cut short Lady Gaga’s stint at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 by returning to the peak position on the main album chart for a tenth non-consecutive week. Adele’s 21 sold another 114,000 copies while Gaga’s Born This Way moved 100,000 in its third week of release. But as Billboard notes, it’s the Broadway cast album for Trey Parker, Matt Stone and Robert Lopez’s multi-Tony winner The Book Of Mormon that truly deserves kudos this week.

Though The Book Of Mormon debuted at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre in New York only three months ago, it’s already gone on to win nine Tony Awards, five Drama Desk Awards, four Outer Critics Circle Awards and the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Musical.

Additionally, the Ghostlight Records original cast recording climbs to #3 on the Top 200 after an Amazon MP3 store $1.99 sale helped bump last week’s total number of copies sold to 61,000. (The album had already fallen down all 200 positions and off the chart last week. If only Beyonce could pull the same feat on the Hot 100 with “Rule The World (Girls)”!)

Billboard chart guru Keith Caulfield notes that The Book Of Mormon now marks the highest charting Broadway cast album since 1969, when Hair spent 13 straight weeks at No. 1.

The cast recording has also racked up the largest sales week for any cast album in the Nielsen SoundScan era (since 1991), and trumps the Phantom of the Opera (Highlights), which posted the previous best sales week for a cast when it sold 54,000 copies over the Christmas week of 1992.

See that, kids — religion and the F word equal a $imply magic combination!

  1. Xadax

Yes! Slap Gaga’s craptastic album Adele! I prefer listening to “21″ than “Bored This Way”.

  2. Ceevox

It’s just the factor of happiness Adele had with this album, that’s a thing that every year can make one artist as a surprise, but Lady Gaga is here to stay with her 3rd album breaking records and giving amazing performances.
Still, one thing not to forget:
Adele sold 2.2 million after for 16 weekd. Gaga, meanwhile, has sold about 1.4 million records in just 3 weeks!
With new video out and one more single and tour which is yet to come, she will bi multiplatinum and at the end of year might be even better then Adele.
For example I heard Rolling in the deep in december 2010 when the video was out, but my sister heard it now!?! And I don’t know how it’s possible, but obviously it is that there is more people that haven’t heard it yet!
While for Lady Gaga most of the audience heard it in first weeks.
She set the record with Born this way single and album and that’s important. Single sold almost 3 million!

  3. Marihanna

And that is still waaaaaaaaaaaaay better than Britney Spears that had 1st week of 276,000 copies and the 2nd with 75,000 and 3rd with 43,000! o.O

  4. Weebad

What’s wrong with people? She sold 1.4 millions in just 3 weeks in USA only!!! It’s unusually high in today’s music industry. Madonna’s Hard Candy or Britney’s Femme Fatale are not close to that!
Beside that and the thing that she has already done an incredible sale and is #2 worldwide of the year, after ONLY 3 WEEKS!
This is what no other pop star is capable to bring, this energy and new performance every single day!

i’m a gaga fan, but i’m elated that Adele is at number one again. yeah, yeah: gaga might have sold more total so far, but it’s very much the tortoise and the hare. no gimmicks, Adele just keeps on keeping on.

oh, Aesops. how much youve taught me.

(and “bored this way” made me laugh, xadax, though the album has nice beats to go running to)

  6. Why

Here where I live I’ve been hearing “I wanna go” more often than Adele and Gaga so you guys can suck on that. LOL
