Rihanna’s Loud tour is off to a thundering start, which is no surprise, really — we ranked her as one of the hottest performers of the summer, remember? And all the colorful, cutting-edge style she displays on stage is no accident: she’s working with a top-shelf wardrobe team, led by designer Mel Ottenberg. And if you’re heading to see her (or perhaps winning your tickets), you’ll definitely want a peek at the show’s stylish costumes, which run from candy-colored pants to dog-tag armor and neon face masks. Check below for our exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the “S&M” songbird’s tour costumes — guided by Rihanna herself!

“You look like diamonds, baby,” she says. “You look like a million bucks.” And she’s just playing around, but the striking thing about these shots is just how incredible she looks standing there in a black tank top and Nike sneakers. (Not that we mind seeing her in the the occasional red-hot photoshoot, either).

When putting together a show of this caliber, everything is in the details: from choreographer Stephanie Roos’ mind-blowing dance routines, to Rihanna’s own custom technicolor wardrobe. More than any other footage we’ve seen, this video reveals just how HUGE and complex the Loud operation has to be.
