Lady Gaga Sued Over Japan Earthquake Charity Bracelets

Lady Gaga’s “We Pray For Japan” bracelets may have turned out to cause more harm than good. Sold on her website with the promise that 100% of the proceeds from sales of the bracelets would go to earthquake relief, now a Michigan-based law firm called 1-800-LAW-FIRM alleges that Gaga made some major bank on the sale of items whose profits were supposed to go exclusively to charity.

Lady Gaga sold her bracelets for $5, but buyers also had to shell out $3.99 for shipping and handling, and $.90 in taxes. The lawsuit claims, however, that Gaga exaggerated all those costs, overcharged buyers on shipping and “artificially inflated reports of total donations.”

Says Alyson Oliver, an attorney from 1-800-LAW-FIRM, “While we commend Lady Gaga for her philanthropic efforts, we want to ensure that claims that ‘all proceeds will be donated to Japan’s earthquake’ are in fact true.”

“Our intention via this lawsuit is to uncover any improprieties committed by Lady Gaga and appropriate the full donations assumed to the victims in Japan.”

This lawsuit has some interesting timing, as it was filed while Lady Gaga was in Japan to perform at MTV’s Music Aid Japan, which supports the Japanese Red Cross.
