Review Revue: Critics React To Beyonce’s “Best Thing I Never Had” Video

July 8th, 2011 // 18 Comments

Over a month ago we whipped up a Review Revue for Beyonce’s second 4 single “Best Thing I Never Had,” and the response veered pretty much toward the positive side of the spectrum (especially after the lackluster performance of “Run The World (Girls)”). Now the wedding-themed video for the upbeat tell-off track has premiered. Once again we found ourselves compelled to survey what the Internet at large had to see about Bey’s latest offering. Read on!

:: Entertainment Weekly‘s Music Mix took a look at Bey’s vid and raved, “…damn if Ms. Knowles isn’t at her peak — in voice, in looks, in taste in opulent wedding gowns (by Baracci Beverly Hills).”

Beyonce Best Thing I Never Had video 2:: Rolling Stone also said “I do” to Beyonce’s clip: “The video hits all of its marks perfectly, conveying all of the nuances in the lyrics while providing a lovely, memorable visual.”

:: Zap2it.com got straight to the point: “Beyonce looks super pretty in a wedding dress. That’s the take-away from her new video for the single ‘Best Thing I Never Had’.”

:: PopCrush appeared to breathlessly analyze every frame, and finally concluded with this: “Beyonce’s having the last laugh and a life full of happiness now. Not to mention the fact that she is one of the most striking creatures on earth. No wonder she is celebrating the sorry loser with whom she split. The video issues its own memo to boy who broke the Queen Bee’s heart: It sucks to be you right now.”

:: New York Magazine joked, “Hell, Kate Moss had more outfits in her wedding than Beyonce does in this video, which has been compared to bad Victoria’s Secret and David’s Bridal commercials. So it might be more low-budget than ‘Run the World,’ but it’s still true to Beyonce, who has never hidden her love of wearing underwear or wedding dresses.”

Beyonce Best Thing I Never Had video 3:: Prefixmag quipped, “Beyonce’s 4 is the current No. 1 album on the Billboard 200, with impressive first week sales of 310,000. This video for ‘Best Thing I Never Had’ is presumably being issued in an attempt to fend off the traditional second week dip in sales. Whether that’s successful or not is moot—4 is still an album without a hit single behind it, although this track feels like it’s got all the appropriate anthemic qualities to change that.”

:: The Prophet Blog got in a few jabs: “Luckily Beyonce’s totally hot, so she kind of gets away with just walking around and being beautiful and sexy for a whole video. Imagine if they’d tried to inject a really loose plot into Rihanna’s ‘California King Bed’ visual, and you’ve got ‘Best Thing I Never Had’.”

:: Meanwhile, Global Grind rounded up the 10 best shots of Bey in the vid while comically noting, “Last night’s premiere of Beyonce’s ‘Best Thing I Never Had’ was a great make up for not seeing her marital union with Jay-Z a few years ago.”

When in doubt and your time is running out, take off your clothes and prance around half naked for the duration of your video in order to sell a video and a cd and you have the makings of a beYAWNcy video. I found it boring and useless and it’s apparent that she spent no time watching youtube to copy someone else’s videos as she has done in the past, which is the result of this boring and effortless video. Leave it to those beYAWNcy fanatic’s to find this video something worth bragging about when in fact it is nothing short than amateur just as her recent cd 4. I’ve never found any of her cd’s worthy of purchasing and frankly doesn’t care too much for her as an artist because I found myself looking at her copy every artist dead or alive and receive rave reviews when everyone knows she is notorious for doing such. I have never been able to understand an artist such as she is, is able to get away with receiving awards for copying.

  2. Disgusted by Beyonce

I hope that parents stop allowing their children to watch Beyonce videos and purchase Beyonce albums. She is totally disgusting and is sending such a poor message to young people.

I have never bought a Beyonce cd and I have no intention of doing so. Beyonce stands for a stripper culture.

    Let’s take back music.

Let’s endorse real artists that have integrity and pride.

If we continue to endorse Beyonce we will only get more of this foolishness as it will become the new standard.

Beyonce has no problem stripping for the masses. Stripping for a hundred, thousand, trillion.

First I will say that from the comments above, people will love and hate you. You will never be “loved” by everyone.

Second, your comments does not affect Beyonce’s money and her happiness.

Your negative comments helps her to go further. My thing is, if you don’t like her then STOP posting your filthy nasty comments!

Your comments means crap to her and to those who “love and see her true talent”. Everyone is inspired by someone…so get off her ass!

  4. I AGREE WITH YOU JBOOGIE!!!!!!!!!! AND NOTE TO ALL THE DAMN HATERS GET A DAMN LIFE YOU JUST WISH YOU WAS ON HER LEVEL!!!! BEYONCE IS WONDERFUL,TALENTED,BEAUTIFUL,AND A GREAT ROLE MODEL TO YOUNG GIRLS EVEN OLDER PEOPLE. I LOVE BEYONCE AND I WILL ALWAYS SUPPORT HER SHE IS THE #1 CHICK IN THE GAME AND NO ONE AND I MEAN NO ONE IS ON HER LEVEL!!!! BEYONCE KEEP DOING WHAT YOU DOING GIRL, YOU WILL ALWAYS HAVE HATERS BUT YOU WILL ALSO HAVE FANS TO SUPPORT YOU, I SUPPORT YOU AND LOVE YOU:)

I am a fan but I’m disappointed in this video. I thought she could have and should have done more with the video. My opinion.

I guess I am tired of seeing this talented creature always being naked. The song technically did not get any great musical reviews, just appearance reviews. Here’s the problem with that, you have a young Rihanna coming behind an almost 30 year old woman. Whether Ri can sing or not is not an issue because there are many times I do not think that Bey can sing, but her looks, as in this video is what gets her over. As Jay-Z continues to manage Ri’s career, she will get the Beyonce type promotion. With that being said, I think Bey short changes herself. I am not a die hard fan, but I love to see her dance, and she’s queen to me as far as makeup goes.
I get sick of people saying, blah, blah, blah, she’s still making money and she’s happy well, so am I . Perhaps the people who continue to defend her like they’re paid lawyers had best get off the internet and go to school and become a lawyer instead of being an unpaid internet lawyer for a woman who does not know you exist. Just a suggestion.

  7. this is a really good song and vidoe

I agree too that Beyonce could have done much more with the video to follow the lyrics. The lingerie shot was very skanky and pointless. As with most of her wardrobe.Beyonce is so talented and such a household name to where she doesnt have to do all that anymore. I always wondered how could she dress and dance like that in front of her own dad. DISGUSTING!!! With all that being said I cant take nothing from the girl. I love this song so much. I posted it on my facebook page and now everyone is tagging it on thiers. The writer really did his/her thing and Beyonce does a wonderful job conveying it as well. Its def. a healing song and every key is on point. I love the song itself alone to where I would def. go buy the album.

It would be great if commentors would stay ON POINT and critique the video and the video only. The question was “what did you think of the video?” I think Beyonce` wasted an opportunity to tell a great story; too much of the video was here simply singing the song. I would’ve like to see more backstory on the ex she’s singing about.

  10. z

She needs to bring back Sasha Fierce. This new album isn’t the worst ever but lacks the giant club songs we all love B for. There arent any tracks that come close to songs like Sweet Dreams, or even Irreplaceable. As for this video it was a complete bore. She seems like she’s giving up.

Tell yo momma to get a life…and stop tricking on the boulevard, and you get a life so you can stop sucking up in beYAWNcys twat.

LMAO @ These idiots letting someone elses negative comments about this opportunistic tramp beYAWNcy get them soooo upset. It shows how ignorant and feeble minded they are. If and when someone says says something negative about someone I that I’m a fan of, I don’t or wouldn’t have the audacity to get on a site and get angry because someone says something negative about them because none of their money is going my pocket. It just goes to show how seriously ill people are….and I don’t like beYAWNcy, but I find it psychologically funny to see how my negative comments can make these idiots get so angry and they be seriously upset. In life everyone has their own opinion of someone or something and their opinion cannot be swayed because someone else disagrees with them. It would ignorant to get on a site and argue with someone else who has a different opinion. LMAO. Oh yeah, beYAWNcy is an INDUSTRY WHORE!!!

  13. Valarie

Beautiful song and video. I think most women have a “Best Thing I Never Had” moment. The video is beautiful. Beyonce looks gorgeous. The lingerie, wedding dress are simply lovely. If anyone does not like it, that’s your choice. Babyface wrote a beautiful song. Beyonce’s music is always uplifting to women. I am encouraged by her music.

  14. baliqis

    wonderful comment,i love it,thanks 4 that :0

  15. Toni

Can anyone be so full of themselves as Beyonce …. This could have been an interesting story if we didn’t have so much footage of lingerie and closeups of her over-acting face…. Just my opinion. Oh, and her voice grates on my nerves…lol

    Thank You!!!

Who says beYAWNcy ? Really ? Sounds like a middle school name. Lmao; anyway , yes .. the beginning of the video was a little ‘overexposed’, even I AM a fan and I already knew people were going to , AS ALWAYS, say something about it . Beyonce has done everything she’s wanted to do , so why not have a LITTLE happiness for her ? Even IF you are a bitter person who so can’t happen but to constantly keep going to each post saying something about her ? At the end of the day, she’s STILL famous, STILL selling albums (even old ones) , and still being played. A comment REALLY isn’t going to change that . Another thing, WHY argue , what’re you proving ? That we all can type words ? Really. Music really isn’t music anymore , it’s people competing and having people say negative things for no apparent reason. If you don’t like her, DON’T come to the forums … Would make a lot more sense than one would ACTUALLY ‘think’.
