Jerry Lieber, of prolific songwriting and producing team Lieber & Stoller, has died of cardiopulmonary failure at the age of 78. With Lieber as the main lyricist and Mike Stoller writing the music, the duo rose to fame in the late 50s and early 60s penning songs for several artists, most notably Elvis Presley (“Jailhouse Rock”, “Hound Dog”, “(You’re So Square) Baby I Don’t Care”), and was responsible for helping bring R&B into pop music. Most recently, the team’s work was celebrated on American Idol with Lady Gaga mentoring the Top 4 as they prepared songs by Lieber & Stoller. [Via PopDust]
