Who knew that when Nevermind was released on September 24, 1991, the sledgehammer of an alt-rock album would go on to dramatically alter the sound of radio, reinvent the look and aesthetic of bands on MTV and provide a 42-minute manifesto for an entire generation of disillusioned youth? Certainly not Nirvana or their label. Geffen Records hopefully predicted the album — which contains “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “Come As You Are” and “In Bloom” — would sell 250,000 copies total. Twenty years later, Nevermind has passed the 30 million mark. Sadly, despite his protest in “Lithium,” frontman Kurt Cobain did indeed crack under the pressures of fame and drug addiction, and, at the age of 27, took his own life in April 1994. /
