The X Factor finally reaches our shores on Wednesday September 21, and though its arrival has been endlessly hyped up as the next big thing in reality singing competitions, there’s not a whole lot the show is offering that we haven’t seen before. In fact, after watching four new promos for the show, we’re getting major flashbacks to practically every season of American Idol — and not just because Paula and Simon are back together on the judges’ panel. Jump below to see what we mean.
Look, it’s Simon Cowell getting snippy with snotty contestants!
Sob stories!
Talented kids who should probably be in school!
Okay, it’s not all the same… now there’s the possibility of four guys winning instead of one girl.
If they really wanted to make it seem like a fresh change from Idol, why not throw Simon in a baggy Cosby sweater or something? It’s a start.
Will you be watching The X Factor premiere? And do you even care that it’s barely different from Idol? Let us know on Facebook, Twitter, or in the comments below.

More classless junk from a classless boor. I wouldn’t watch these idiots for money. American Idol sucks like most reality programming on network television. Count me out.
I’m from Ireland and Uk’s xfactor has a lot of different stuff that America hasn’t seen. Each judge is given a category to mentor boys, girls, groups and under 25′s and this creates a competition between the judges. Each judge takes them to one of there houses and perform there in order to get to the live finals. In live show’s there’s a lot more choreography than other reality singing competitions and there’s props and stuff. You will see the difference when they get more into it!
*Over 25′s
Becky Bain, have you seen The X Factor UK? On the surface, they look similar. But, if you dig deeper they are different. The audition rounds are held in front of an audience. This is done to tell how the singer will perform in front of an audience. This way, the judges can tell immediately how the singers will do in the live shows. Because, we’ve all seen singers on American Idol (and the early years of X Factor) who do well singing at a hotel room, but flunk when they have to sing in front of an audience.
American Idol doesn’t have bootcamp for the singers.
American Idol doesn’t have singers over the age of 26. Also, American Idol doesn’t have groups. Also, X Factor has better singers because of the mentoring.
X Factor makes you feel like you’re at a concert with all the lighting, and special effects.
So, how can you sit here and say that the two shows are identical when they aren’t?
Yes, I realize there are many differences between the shows. I was just (humorously) pointing out how many similarities the two shows have, according to these promos.
But its not (humorous) pointing out similarities that nearly every single singing competition has! You cant judge it by that!
I loooooove idol and i hate waiting till january to watch it so im pumped
