Cee Lo Green has brought some serious retro soul into pop music with his fantastic The Lady Killer, and today surfaces another killer track from The Voice coach, “You Promised Me Love”. It’s either way new or super old, but worth a listen either way. Jump below to hear Cee Lo turn into a “Cry Baby” while singing about a lover who lied to him.

Cee Lo Green — “You Promised Me Love”

The tune starts off at a frantic pace, before slowing down as Cee Lo starts things off sounding pretty deflated over a tinkling piano: “There once was a hopeless romantic / who would give away his heart on a whim / I am no longer him.”

The track picks up again, and builds as an interesting blend of syncopated drum beats and soulful heartbreak. It’s clearly still in the demo phase, but we’re liking what we’re hearing so far.
